Born Friday, July 18, 1930 in Columbus, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Cora Lee and Lucius Monroe Hartley. She was a graduate of Baker High School, received her bachelor's and master's of education from LaGrange College and
her specialist and an administrative add on from West Georgia College. Mrs. Smith worked in the business office of Southern Bell in Columbus for 10 years. She then taught school in the Troup County School System for 25 years. After retiring, she served as the ACE director at Whitesville Road Elementary School for five years and taught adult education at West Georgia Technical College. Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church of West Point and taught Sunday school there. She was an avid University of Georgia fan.

Survivors include three sons, Hal Brim (Lolita) of Newnan, Chuck Smith (Jeri) of West Point and Mike Smith of Opelika; grandchildren, Noah Brim of Newnan, Charles Smith of West Point and James Ballard of Smiths; stepdaughters, Sandra Ames (Richard) of Columbia, S.C., and Opal Leeann Ballard of Smiths; and sisters, Hazel Kirkland of Jacksonville, Fla., and Barbara Brunson of Austin, Texas.
