Patrick N. Uchendu, FCCA, FCA, MBIM, ACTI.
•••Early Life:
Patrick Nwankwo Uchendu was born on the 15th day of January, 1940 to Egbuonu Ezechukwu and Mgboye Margaret Uchendu. He spent his early childhood in Uke where he attended St Dominic's Primary School Uke/Abatete (1946-1953).
Subsequently, he attended Prince Memorial High School, Onitsha for his secondary school education (1956-1960) after a short stint as an elementary school teacher.
At the completion of secondary school, he joined the Administration Office of the Forestry Department, Enugu as a trainee clerk in December 1960.
•••Professional Education & Certifications:
In 1963, P.N. Uchendu proceeded to Yaba College of Technology, Lagos where he studied Accountancy (1963-1965). Next he attended West Bromwich College of Commerce and Technology, West Midlands, England (1973-1975) where he completed his professional training.
Subsequently, he was admitted as an Associate of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) and Member of the British Institute of Management (MBIM) United Kingdom in 1976 and Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) on return to Nigeria.
As a committed civil servant, P.N. Uchendu returned and rejoined the Old Anambra State Civil Service despite various tempting offers from private and public organizations in the United Kingdom and Lagos.
As information and computer technology began to take center stage in the 1980s, he proceeded to obtain post graduate joint diploma in Data Processing, Computer Accounting/Auditing at the Graduate School of Management, University of Dallas, Texas, U.S.A and University of East Anglia School of Computing Studies and Accounting Norwich, United Kingdom in 1982.
•••Work in Civil Service: P.N. Uchendu dedicated his time, talent and expertise to active civil service for over thirty-five years in multiple roles with progressively higher complexity and challenges.
At various times between 1987 and 1990, he served as Financial Controller of Board of Internal Revenue, Deputy Director and Head of Accounts State Education Commission and Deputy Director, Office of Budget and Planning Government House Enugu.
On creation of the new Anambra State in 1991, he was appointed as the Director of Budget, Office of Budget and Planning, Government House, Awka. In 1995 he was appointed Auditor General of Anambra State from where he retired on April 30, 1999 after thirty-five years of great and self-less service.
His high level of professionalism and integrity made him a recurring feature in most government investigative panels, boards of inquiry and training programs in accounting, auditing and treasury management in the old and new Anambra State. This continued even long after he retired from active service — as Consultant to the state government on Civil Service matters.
Additionally, he undertook various special assignments especially in rescue management of various ailing government enterprises and as Chairman of various committees for Anambra State Government.
•••Work in Academia:
For three decades (1970s - 1990s) P.N. Uchendu was immersed in the academia at Departments of Accountancy, University of Nigeria and Institute of Management and Technology Enugu where he taught and mentored numerous young aspiring Chartered Accountants.
He was the “Mr. ICAN” to his students having been district secretary in Enugu (1982 - 1990) and later the founding Chairman of Awka District of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (1995 -2010).
During the foregoing period, he facilitated the initial accreditation of the Department of Accountancy at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka. He was also a member (representing ICAN) of the governing council of Federal Polytechnic Oko (1986-1991).
•••Post Active Civil Service:
On retirement, P.N. Uchendu set-up PAGE consultants with some of his professional colleagues and friends and established Uchendu Patrick Co (Chartered Accountants).
He authored and co-authored several professional publications such as "Public Sector Accounting and Auditing (1997), Managing Public Enterprises in the 21st century (1999).
In retirement, he settled in to write and publish "Gems of wisdom" (Vol 1 and 2), a compilation of the quotes that were his trademark in speeches, The Consolidated History and Culture of Uke, a labour of love for his place of origin and birth and lastly "The Accountant", his autobiography.
•••Select Honors/Awards:Patrick Uchendu was recognised by various organizations and groups with numerous awards, commendations and certificates of recognition. Some samples are — Honorary Citizen of Dallas, Texas, USA, by the Mayor of Dallas (July 1982); Anambra State Government meritorious service in the finance sector; Mmili Kwe Onwa 1 of Uke by H.R.H Igwe G.N.C Ezeude; Nze na Ozo, Uke with the name EZECHUKWU; and Life Patron for Scouts Association of Nigeria,
•••Personal Life & Family:
Patrick was a devout Christian and a member of the Catholic Church. He was baptized by the Most Revd Father Tansi and his childhood friend was late Bishop Vincent Ezeonyia, the late Catholic Bishop of Aba.
Chief Patrick Uchendu was married to Lolo Kate Uchendu (Nee Chiemelu) for over fifty-one years. Their union was blessed with six offsprings (two of whom preceded him in death) and many grandchildren.
A family man and lover of peace who saw the beauty in the individuality of everyone and always gave everybody a chance to prove their mettle and realize their God-given inherent potentials. A rare gem, indeed!
