Life in Europe

June 18, 2013

Pearl and her mother ended up living in Paris, France with a French speaking family. Pearl was finally able to enter school and get a good education. She was top of her class in 8th grade. By the time Pearl was 16, she had completed school and stay home to focus on learning how to complete domestic work and duties of a wife. She'd had quite an incautious behavior, and her mother has always scolded her for her inability to restrain herself. As she grew older, everyone in society started to notice her strong-willed and impetuous spirit. Around the age of 19, Hester arranged for Pearl to marry a 26 year old man named Samuel Addams, a merchant. Samuel was a former member of the Puritan society and he was very fond of Pearl. They got married in 1657. In 1658, Samuel and Pearl travelled to Spain, where he worked handling foreign trades. Pearl started an underground women’s group teaching them how to read and write, with the money she inherited from Chillingworth.  She was able to provide them with books and other learning tools. Pearl wanted the women to be freethinkers and not molded to society’s' sexism, she knew firsthand how they treated women, like they did her mother. While living in Spain, Pearl gave birth to two daughters, Celina and Perla.

Early Life

Pearl Prynne was the daughter of the deceased Hester Prynne. Hester, a transgressor, was publicly humiliated and alienated from the Puritan society after committing adultery. As a child, Pearl was a innocent, joyous, and perceptive little girl. She never fully understood her mother’s punishment of having to wear a scarlet letter on her chest, but her perceptiveness made her inquire about everything around her. One relationship she really had a lot of questions about was the one between her mom and Arthur Dimmesdale, her biological father. No one in their community knew the real truth about him, but Pearl had an odd connection to him whenever they were around each other. She had always had that "sixth sense." When Pearl was seven years of age, Dimmesdale died after admitting to his whole community that he was in fact her father. After his death, Pearl and her mother moved to Europe.
