To all mourners - family, friends and colleagues alike, I want to remind you that no one will live forever… The reality of the past week is that no one knows who’s next! Two week ago, it was the provost’s brother. Now it is Akpan. Indeed, it is a very difficult time for the entire faculty and staff at AUN. Colleagues, friends relatives inclusive. We know that tears and wailing will not bring him back but it is OK for us to display a measure of emotion as a result of the death of this amiable, brilliant young man. We grief like this because God, at the beginning, did not create us to live and then die. Our genes are wired to live forever Eccl 3:11. The devil brought us this unfortunate dilema.
The word of Jesus Christ in the book of Luke 23:28 to the women wailing after Him during His journey to the cross was, simply put, for them to direct such weeping inwards, “weep for yourselves…”
The death of dean Akpan should in retrospect, be seen as a call for sober reflection on our part. No one knows when death will show up so let everyone continue to live their lives as if TODAY is the last and to also do the right thing as much as we can. (What is the right thing?). I enjoin everyone to be strong. May God almighty give us all the fortitude to bear this loss and may God Himself, through Jesus, breathe strength and courage onto Mrs Akpan, the children and everyone that are touched by the death of dean Akpan. Amen.
