Robert Joseph Madigan was a man of great courage and service who devoted his life to providing for his family.

Born in Washington DC on February 28th 1938 to Antonnietta Merando Madigan and Joseph Foster Madigan, “Bobby” enjoyed growing up in DC with his iconic 50’s pop vocalist sister, Betty Madigan. He played trumpet and piano and attended St. Johns military cadet school in Chevy Chase. His early teen years included learning to speak Italian from his 1st generation grandmother and French from the restaurant in which he worked as a young man.

Bob attended George Washington University to study pre-med and pre-law. It was there at his Sigma Alpha Epsilon party that he met his bombshell of a wife to be, Miss Claudia Catherine Cooper.

Soon after, at the dawn of American involvement in the Vietnam War, Bob volunteered for military service, enlisting himself in the Marine Corps on July 31st, 1961.

He married Claudia in Arlington on December 22nd, 1962. Together, they moved to Camp Pendleton in California so Bob could complete combat training for Vietnam. While at Pendleton, Bobby’s French skills proved valuable as he was selected to learn Vietnamese as an intelligence officer.

On February 15th, 1965, Bob and Claudia welcomed their 1st son, Mark Joseph Madigan.

Soon after Mark arrived, in June 1965, Bob hitched a ride on the brand new F-4 Phantom aircraft from Camp Pendleton to Northern Virginia to pass the Bar exam.

On October 17th, 1966, Bob and Claudia welcomed Christopher Robert Madigan to the family.

Bob completed an arduous tour of duty in Vietnam as a Captain and was honorably discharged from the marines.

After celebrating the 1st official US Mother’s Day on May 9th, 1971, Bob and Claudia welcomed Jennifer Claudia Madigan to the family on Jan 24th, 1972.

Bob started his legal career with the government and shortly after, he joined a private law firm. By 1981, he started his own practice, “Madigan & Scott”, which lives on today through his son Mark.

Eventually, Bob and Claudia branched out to become real estate investors and restaurateurs along with their son, Chris. Bob never retired from his law practice but he did find more time to enjoy his dearly loved Jaguar XJS convertible, his boat, and his animals.

Bob was a fiercely and determinedly dedicated man to his family at all costs. He was Captain Bob of his boat, Captain Bobby at St. John’s, and Captain Madigan for the Marine Corps. He was also the Captain of his full extended family until his last day. He never thought twice about putting his own life and well-being in danger to make a better place for us all.

Robert is survived by his sister Betty, his children Mark, Chris, and Jennifer along with his 8 grandchildren and many more great grandchildren with many more to come.
