Robert Francis Michaelis was born October 17, 1938 on the family farm northeast of West Point to Ben and Sylvia (Toelle) Michaelis. He grew up on the farm, graduated from Guardian Angels High School in 1957, and served in the United States Army from September 1956 until September 1958, working as an Army baker assigned to US Navy School of Music in Washington, DC. On September 29, 1962, Bob married Carolyn Rief at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. Bob worked for Martin Donut Company in Omaha, then in West Point for Grain States, Wimmers Meat Products, IBP, and as owner of Bob’s Bakery for thirty years until he retired in 2000. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, serving on St. Mary’s Parish council for three years, Knights of Columbus, West Point Jaycees, and Nebraska Bakers’ Association, serving on the board for 25 years and as Vice President and President two years each. Bob enjoyed his grandchildren, GACC sports, Husker football and basketball, and family reunions. He’s remembered fondly for remembering every wedding anniversary and his wife’s birthday, usually with flowers. Survivors include his wife Carolyn of West Point; daughters Kelly Lynn Michaelis of West Point and Michelle (Mark) Aylor of Lincoln; sons Robert (Colleen) Michaelis of McCook and Scott (Michele) Michaelis of Bennington; grandchildren Brandon, Connor, Devin Michelle, Evan, and Aliece Aylor, Naomi Rose Michaelis, and Thara and Kaylen Michaelis; sisters Jean Popken of Scribner, Arlene (Lester) French of Wood River, IL, and Ruth (William) Nagengast of West Point; brothers James (Sharon) Michaelis of Dodge and Dennis (Linda) Michaelis of West Point; and sister-in-law Iona Michaelis of West Point. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother Kenneth on March 9, 2014; parents-in-law Casper F. and Bernadine Rief; and brother-in-law Duane Popken.
