I am beyond shocked! I had a memory of my old friendship with him and gave it a Google. Thought we might could reconnect. Can't believe that he has passed. We were good friends at Lumberton HS. I remember when I was at LHS I took a crappy car to see him for a weekend at The NC School of Science and Math. I left him my Dad's wool baseball hat from Elkin HS. Blue wool cap, yellow E. He said it brought him so much luck. He returned it to me at some point - probably in Lumberton on a break from school. I remember his laugh, his smiling face, his wit, his positivity. I truly miss you friend. Not sure how all this works, but if there is another place after this world I hope to see you there. - Chris Gentry

I miss my dear friend every day and especially on this day.

I imagine the phone calls and conversations we would have had during this World Cup and the Tarheel basketball season. I cannot watch any of these events without being reminded of Sean.

I miss you Sean. I miss listening to your conversations with Saber where you would go on and on about the Tar Heels. I miss your beautiful video posts and photos of the sun rising over the beach and I miss planning our trip to Ireland. ☘️
I miss worrying about you like a big sister. You were a force and we loved you

I had just found out and I’m deeply sorry for his family and mother. He was one of the best friends I ever had and extremely smart and talented with a big heart. Hard to call someone a friend. Sean was definately a friend and I will miss him deeply. I love you brother.

Sean was part of our family since he was in middle school in Lumberton. Our families were close and enjoyed many social activities that included children. Sean was around and always smiling or laughing. He had such a huge personality that carried over to adulthood. Sean was a great athlete at soccer and tennis, super competitive (like his dad). He played and watched sports all his life; however, Carolina was always his passion.

Our son David, went to school at Science & Math and graduated where Sean did. Sean had to knock the top out of the SAT, have a super high GPA and excell on other measures and personal characteristics to be accepted at NCSSM. After graduating from high school, Sean attended UNC where he was a Tar Heel fan all his life. Go Tar Heels!

There are no words that can describe how we felt about Sean, or how we felt when we heard about his death. What a loss for all of us! Sean was a great guy and will be sorely missed. Prayers for the O’Brien family.
RIP Dear Sean!
With love,
Joyce and Von Beatty

Sean was my roommate in high school and will remain a friend forever. He was unflinchingly loyal, fiercely protective of his friends and always full of life. Rest In Peace Sean. You will be sorely missed.

Sean was such a great friend to me. He would take me to homecoming games at UNC, show me and my wife around the area, and tell us about his glory days at school. He would visit us on Christmas, we would have dinner together often, and he was aways at my house. When he recently moved he would stay in touch and I wished badly that he would return to NC. I am devastated we won't get more time, but will cherish what time we had. Under Seans friendly and often silly exterior was a truly brilliant man who would often shock me with his intelligence and knowledge of all things. Idk what more to say, we are going to miss him so much.

I was so heartbroken to hear of Sean’s passing. I didn’t know him very long, but he was absolutely one of my most favorite humans ever. He was such a smart, fun, good-hearted guy. I’ll never forget second-lining with him around The Bullpen to a big brass band that came down off the stage in an attempt to get the crowd to follow them around like you would in New Orleans. Everyone else just kind of stood there like they weren’t sure what was going on, but Sean was all about it! Rest in peace, OB...you will be missed my friend. I hope they put you in charge of all the music in the afterlife.

Sean was my first nephew and godson. I clearly remember getting the call that he had arrived safely. I couldn’t go to his Baptism because Buffalo was snowed in. But I was the first person Jane left him with on his first visit to New York City. He enlivened all family reunions and willingly shared his computer skills with us old folks.  We shared letters of encouragement and support over the years and he was always in my prayers. May he find the peace and happiness that eluded him in life. God bless you, Sean

I ' m very saddened, my condolences to the O Brien family. I remember him as always being a happy and optimistic person- the conversations that we had. He was a part of the really good team- the short time that we played soccer together.

Sean and I weren't very close at S&M. However at UNC we became friends over our mutual love. I remember reconnecting with him at reunions and sharing new music and bands with each other. How fitting is it that the music here is Superchunk AF. you will be missed dearly.

At different times in my life, Sean O was my Boss, my landlord, manager of my band, web designer, videographer, and social media manager, but more importantly always my brother and friend. I truly thought he was indestructible and would be with us the whole way, but The Most High had other plans. I'm gonna miss you bro. HFF Brother Sean O...

I always admired Sean. He was two years older than me in high school but he was always one of my favorite upper classmen. He was very witty, athletic and an all around cool dude. I admired his decision to bolt from LHS to go to the NC School of Math and Science. I almost followed his lead, but decided to stay in Lumberton for my junior and senior years. I enjoyed talking to him occasionally on Facebook through the years and share our love of Chapel Hill and everything UNC. I don't know what happened, but I pray that Sean is at peace. He will be missed.

His Life
September 28, 2020
Sean Dennis O'Brien was born on December 8, 1969 and departed this life unexpectedly on September 24, 2020.  He will be remembered for his unmatched intelligence, big heart and unwavering generosity.
Sean lived life full tilt.  He poured all of himself into whatever he was doing at the time.  Highly competitive and always striving for perfection Sean would spend as much time as it would take to perfect a skill or project.  He would stay up all night to make sure a website he was creating was just right and would not stop until it was perfect.

Sean was born in Buffalo, NY but soon moved to North Carolina and resided on the campus of NCSU where he perfected the job as an R.A. with his parents during his toddler years.  He then moved to Lumberton, NC for the remainder of his childhood where he  became an accomplished high school athlete.  He was a key member of Lumberton High School soccer and tennis teams.  After getting perfect scores on numerous college entrance exams including the PSAT and SAT, it was clear that Sean's mind needed to be challenged more than Lumberton could provide.  He then applied and was accepted to the NC School of Science and Math in Durham.  After graduating from NCSSM in 1988 Sean went on to attend The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  While there, he became a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity where his outgoing nature and jovial attitude thrived.

Sean held many jobs throughout his life going from lifeguard in Lumberton to working at Top of the Hill in Chapel Hill (when it was a convenience store).  He was a bartender at Carolina Coffee Shop in Chapel Hill followed by All Conference manager in Hillsborough and many other titles including reggae band manager and promoter.
Later in his working life, Sean discovered information technology and in this found his true professional calling.  He could not accept not knowing how something worked so he studied technology and gained multiple IT certifications and endless knowledge not measured by a certificate.  He worked for many years in IT creating websites and later starting his own IT company while also working in network security.

One of Sean's many tech hobbies was creating beautiful drone videos.  He achieved this by  combining his passion for music and technology.  Some of his amazing footage of one of his favorite places (Holden Beach) can be viewed on the attached You Tube link.

Sean was larger than life and had the ability to make friends and make people feel better wherever he roamed.  He loved nature, dogs and was generous beyond measure.  Please leave more stories, pictures, and videos on this site to be preserved (at any time or year of your choosing) indefinitely.
