S Swotzelbot

July 9, 2014

Stan signed my high school yearbook (senior year, I think) He wrote three smart aleck things, but I remember two: "Tell 'em where you got it!" and "Don't let your meat loaf!" Love, S. Swotzelbot (a silly nickname he had at the time).  Unbeknownst to me, my Dad was sneaking peaks at my yearbook.  He became enraged when he read Stan's entry, not knowing it was Stan's.  He wanted to know who this no-good-rock-and-roll dropout was!  I wouldn't tell him...just some kid!  Stan always took me under his wing...he worked at Bill Martini's "Living Room" and I visited him often.  One night, he was on vacation, and I went to the Living Room.  Bill Martini was angry that his cocktail waitress had no showed...AGAIN!  He offered me a job on the spot...knowing I was Stan's sister...not knowing I was not yet 21... I asked him not to tell Stan as I wanted to surpirse him.  When Stan came back and was counting his bank, I had hid in the pool room.  I came out and hollered "ordering!"  He turned around, stuck his hand in the ice, then, shocked, looked up and said "Holy S#*t! You're my sister!"  We worked together alot, there and Balboa Pavilion.  He was the toughest on me, workwise, because he wanted me to be the best! Love and miss you Stan.  Stories of how I met Barb ans "Stanely" to come...always more to come...so much to tell about the big brother who taught me the most!

Stan the man (pops)

June 28, 2014
The first time I met Stan was at the Outback Steakhouse in Orange with Denaya and Barbara. It was a pleasant evening. When we were leaving he pulled me aside on the parking lot and said " don't you hurt my little girl". I thought that was kind of funny because we were in our 40s. A little less than a year later he would be not only my father-in-law but one of the coolest guys I have ever known. Pops was a real manly man who loved all sports and JOHN WAYNE movies like I do. We could talk for hours about anything ,but there was never enough time. I MISS AND LOVE U STAN!!!!!

Memories of Balboa

June 27, 2014

So many good times whenever my sisters and I went down to visit our dad in Balboa... from when we were kids hanging out at Maddy's Bay Arcade... so many scrumptious dinners at the Tale of the Whale... all the fun bay cruises on the Pavilion Queen (hanging out in the wheelhouse)... the many trips across the channel to Avalon on the Catalina Flyer... riding our bikes from Huntington down the boardwalk in Newport all the way down to the Fun Zone... hanging out in the bar at Dillman's... having burgers at the first Ruby's on the Balboa pier... sipping margaritas at Mi Casa... Orange Julius... seeing the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Balboa Theater in high school... meeting all of Daddy's nice friends as we strolled along the boardwalk... (sneaking up on the roof to the cupola with that cute skipper)... most importantly, hanging out at Dad & Barbara's place on Fernando... how blessed we were to have such a cool dad!

Stan's 15-month journey

June 27, 2014

On January 15, 2013, Stan was diagnosed with Stage 3 esophageal cancer. With his loving wife, Barbara, at the helm, Stan fought fiercely against this insidious disease undergoing several rounds of chemotherapy and various clinical trials. Ultimately, his esophagus was removed in October with the goal of removing the cancerous cells from his body. After a month of recovery from that surgery, it was discovered that the cancer had spread to other organs. Stan continued to undergo more treatment, but began suffering from numerous health problems due to the deterioration of his immune system. He spent the last 50 days of his life in and out of the Intensive Care Unit at UCI Medical Center in Orange, California. On May 13, he became unable to breath on his own and his wishes were to not remain on life support if there was no chance of recovery. On May 15, 2014, with Stan's dedicated wife and children at his side, Stan left this world to suffer no more and join his loved ones in heaven. As many of you know, Stan's younger brother, Kenny Paul, was also on his own journey suffering from cancer and passed away only minutes before Stan, enabling them to enter the pearly gates hand in hand. God bless all those who suffer from this insidious disease and their loved ones who take this journey as well.
