Mary La Vern “Vernie” Hoskins nee Talbert

February 4th, 1941 – April 12th, 2019

Vernie Hoskins graced this world on a cold Tuesday, February 4, 1941 in Covington, Kentucky. Vernie came in to the world full of love, hope and seeing the world with rose colored glasses. This beautiful woman so full of love and life was positively adored by many from coast to coast. Our Lord and Savior called her home on the sunny morning of Friday, April 12, 2019. She gladly accepted his calling. With a lifetime of faith, love dedication and devotion she was ready to meet her Lord and Savior.

Vernies Life Journey:

Vernie was Born in Covington, Kentucky - raised in the Northern KY area. She spent her early years attending grade school and making friends that she still knew till her last moments. Friends she called up on the phone daily and kept up with on their life’s journeys. She spent time at Cold Spring Orphanage for 7th-8th grade. Here, Vernie made many friends and even created a special friendship with one of her nuns. A friendship that lasted till the end. Sister Mary Regula was a friend of Vernie’s that used to call her and send her Christmas cards.

When she was 14 or 15, she really wanted to be a Nun. Mother (Grandma Kay) played a joke on her by taking her to see the convent where they had a vow of silence and were not able to see or talk to their families. She decided that she did not want to be a nun because the idea of not talking to her family would be devastating to her. But the orphanage was not Vernies only home and interest. One of the things she loved was business and she attended Business and typing schools in 1954, after graduating from 8th grade.

Vernie was so full of love and devoted to those she loved.Uncle Joe once asked her, “you really do love us all so much don’t you?”. She sai,. “I do, that is why I say it so much!”. And she meant it and showed it with everything she did. Uncle Terry said, “She was our surrogate mother, she was always the mother. She took care of us all”

Vernie was a mother. Uncle Terry said: “she was the cutest thing barefoot and pregnant!” And her love and affection for her children shone through everything she did. She was blessed with 8 children who loved her dearly. Karen, Lynn, Susan, Becky, Melissa, Mark, Mary and her step-daughter Monica. And her children blessed her with the following grandchildren that were the apple of Grandmas eye. Chrissy, Katie, Jimmy, Vanessa, Jared, Joey, Nicholas, Lizzy, Ronny, Nathaniel, Kendra, Ryan Thomas, Mark Jr., Veronica, Gabriel, Joshua AND Milo. She also had some beautiful great grandchildren that absolutely loved and adored her. Her great grandchildren include Wayne, Leilani, Melody, Jonathan, Logan, Duraymond, Jimmy Jr., and Preston.

Vernie moved to California in 1971. She was a long and faithful resident of West Garden Grove. Her quaint little house still sits on St. Mark St. Many… Many… Many… memories were made here. And a lifetime of laughs and love held the foundation of this home together. Her home was a place of celebrations for birthdays, weddings, and everything family and togetherness. Vernie worked at Sunshine Biscuit Company from 1977 to 1996. Through her work there, she made a lot of life-long friends and met the love of her life Santiago. Together the 2 of them spent decades in love and sharing their lives together. This included many vacations, getaways and various fun together on life’s journey.

Vernie was a faithful and devoted Christian. As she grew, so did her love for the Lord. Her church family was an important part of her life. More importantly, her relationship with the Lord was strong and unbreakable. She could often be found in the morning with a cup of coffee and her bible in hand. Also, attending church functions and helping the church in whatever way she could always made her so happy. In her younger years she taught bible study where she and her children attended church. Her devotion to the Lord, the bible, and church was passed down to her children, grandchildren, friends and family.

Vernie enjoyed everything life had to offer. Her “programs” kept her busy and happy. She loved Matlock, Bones, NCIS, Law and Order, Blue Bloods (because of her man Tom Selleck of courseJ) The Mentalist and many others…Vernie loved to let everyone enjoy a movie with her. Amongst her favorites were Burlesque, Hochi, Seabiscuit, A Princess for Christmas, The American President and more. If you had the pleasure of watching these shows and movies with her, you know she was beaming from ear to ear watching them. And let us not forget… The Twilight Series… J Vernie really did love her some Edward! J

Vernie also loved to cook, and bake. But, especially bake. Not a birthday went by (for both family and close friends) where Vernie did not make the cake. She would ask you “what’s your favorite?” and then make a big cake or just a cake for you and multiple cakes for others. Her peanut butter cookies were world famous and the recipe is a cherished family keepsake still. If you came to Vernies house, most of the time the oven was on and the aroma from the house smelled delicious!

Throughout her life, Grandma, Mom, Sister, Friend, Companion – Vernie dedicated her life to loving and caring for others. She will be missed. Her spirit lives on through her children and grandchildren and every person that her love touched. She exemplified what self-sacrifice, generosity, faith and love looked like. She was such a beautiful spirit for this world.

When Vernie made it to Heaven’s gates she was greeted with open arms by her loving Savior in Heaven and met by her

Vernie is survived by:

• Her loving brother: Terrence (Uncle Terry) Herman Talbert
• Her soul mate: Santiago Rodriguez

Her loving Children:

• Lynn Nensteil; Susan Anderson; Rebecca Hoskins; Melissa Bodnar; Mark Hoskins; Mary Hoskins and step-daughter Monica Perez.
• Along with her 16 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many family and friends who absolutely loved and adored her.
