Virginia M. Preston, formerly of Itasca, Illinois, passed away on December 22, 2018 at her home near Houston, Texas. She was born October 4, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, the middle child of Elmer and Hazel (Weldon) Cato. Itasca was Virginia's home for more than 60 years, and she was a teacher in the Itasca Public School District for over 30 years. While teaching elementary grades, Virginia earned a Master's degree and finished her career as the reading specialist for the District. Virginia moved to Texas in 2017 and lived independently near her daughter past her 92nd birthday. She had many interests, especially reading and working puzzles, playing bridge, tending her garden, and cheering for the Cubs.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years (George L. Preston), daughter (Barbara Preston), parents, brother (Elmer Cato), and sister (Nancy Voss). She is survived by her children Howard (Laurie) Preston and Caryn Preston; grandchildren Jeff (Dina) Preston, Laura Preston, and John (Carole) Stretton; great grandchildren Claire, Noah and Lilly Preston; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was especially close with her sister’s children (Carol Deger, Kimberly McDonald, Keith Voss, Kevin Voss), celebrating many holidays together. Her former neighbors in Itasca were like family.
To celebrate Virginia’s life and to honor her lifelong love of reading, the Itasca Community Library has graciously allowed the family to host a reception at their facility, 500 W. Irving Park Rd., on February 2, 2019 from 2-4 pm. The family requests any donations be made to the Itasca Community Library in Virginia's honor.
