Just posted one of my favorite photos of Jim and his dog on a summer day. Remembering afternoons gabbing, chopping, cooking and setting the table before evening dinner parties with friends. A toast to you my friend!

Jim's classes were always engaging and thought-provoking. He had extremely high expectations for his students, and we were motivated to reach these standards simply because we did not want to disappoint him. At the same time, he was deeply committed to the artistic process and always made me feel like my choices made sense. I will continue to strive to be half the educator he was.

As the museum curator of the Valentinetti Puppet Museum in Bremerton, WA it has been my pleasure to include in our displays the very first puppets which Jim Hawkins created while attending a summer class at the UW, Seattle under the direction of Aurora Valentinetti. These 2 figures are PETER and GRANDFATHER from Peter and the Wolf. Sadly I never had an opportunity to meet Prof. Hawkins.

In the 21 years of Thistle Theatre, I recall what Jim taught. “What do you want the audience to carry home in their basket?” Such a “Jim” thing to say! Not only should what you want to teach a child be in that basket, but it should be filled with all manner of memories and it should have matching linens! Farewell and thank you teacher, mentor and friend for sharing your many gifts.

Jim, was by far the best teacher I have ever had. He inspired me to teach puppetry and Children's Theatre in my drama classes. Without his guidance, creativity, and knowledge he passed on, I never would have attempted it. His compassion and love for people was also evident. I will remember him fondly.
