His Life

Early Years and education

Abdoulie was born on 1 March 1937 in Banjul, The Gambia to Alieu Badara Njie and Oumie Sowe, the oldest of five children.

He was educated at Methodist Boys High School, the Master William Adult School and he also attended Daara at Pa Jobarteh.

"At an early age, he showed keen interest and promise especially in football, cricket, athletics, table tennis, lawn tennis and a variety of indoor games; his versatile sporting activities coupled with self- discipline and loyalty to his school, was to earn him sports Captain of Aggrey House and sports captain of Methodist Boys High School."                       Charles Thomas
 
His disciple and dedication led him to excel not only academically but also in sport and at an early age represent his School, National and International teams at both football and cricket. 

In the United Kingdom he attended Westminster College in London, was articled at a firm of Chartered Accountants and was a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. He served as the Secretary General of the Gambia Students Union in the UK form 1962 to 1966.


Family

Abdoulie (Daddy Dandeh) was a wonderful father and family always came first.

Abdoulie and Clarissa Aino Norman were married in 1965 and they had three children Isha , Oumie and Badou.

Abdoulie and Zahra Bensouda were married in 1975 and they had three children Ebou, Haddy and Kader.

Ian, Saida, Bill, Celine and Basadi (the in-laws) were much his children as his own and he welcomed them into the family.

He is survived by eleven grandchildren-Sean, Siad, Dador, Isha, Sade, Ebou, Abdoulie, Fatima, Zain, Seline and Serena.

Career Highlights

Abdoulie started is career in the United Kingdom as an Accountant/Taxation Consultant and was admitted as a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.

He returned to the Gambia, where he became the Accountant for the S Madi Group of Companies and in 1979 became the Managing Director for S Madi (Gambia) ltd, a post he held until 1997.

In 2010, Abdoulie created Abden Company Ltd, of which he was the Chief Executive Officer.

Abdoulie also served his country as a Member of Parliament from 1982 to 1992. He was a member of People's Progressive Party, serving as a member of the Central Committee, the National Executive Committee and the Selection Committee. Over this period he served as Chairman of the Public accounts Committee and also the Treasurer of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (Gambia Branch).

Sporting Prowess

Abdoulie had a undeniable talent for sport and at the age of 17, Abdoulie was representing his country both nationally and internationally, most prominently in Football and Cricket. 

In the 50's and 60's, he shone as part of the formidable First Division Football Team White Phantoms and participated in many intercolonial matches against Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. He played in the same team as other football legends: goalkeeper Amadou Taal, the agile forward Eku Forbes, and master- defender Ebou Mass Taal.

In 1976 Abdoulie captained the team that played against the Marylebone Cricket Club, the custodian and arbiter of Laws relating to cricket around the world. 

He was a founder member of Worcester and Nyaato cricket clubs respectively, both of which he captained at league level. He became President of the Gambia Cricket Association in the early 80's and a founder member of the West Africa Cricket Conference (WACC).  After election to the Presidency of WACC, Abdoulie represented the WACC in numerous international conferences including at the International Cricket Conference (ICC), promoting cricket in the West African sub-region.

Sports Administration

Following a distinguished career representing the Gambia in Cricket and Football,  Abdoulie moved into another sport he loved. He served as President of the Gambia Tennis Association for 8 years before being asked to head the Gambian Olympic Committee.

In 1989, with the support of almost 20 sporting associations in the Gambia, Abdoulie was made president of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC). A position he held until he stepped down in 2008. 

During this period, he demonstrated the highest dedication, commitment, proficiency and efficiency to the running of the GNOC. He achieved remarkable institutional growth by streamlining the organisation for peak performance, securing effective female representation in the administration, and securing important positions in international organisations especially within the international Olympic Committee family. Under his leadership the GNOC launched many initiatives and projects. These include the May Day Sports, the annual Sports Banquet and Awards Ceremony, sports for the Disabled, Sports scholarships abroad, and technical and administrative courses at home.

Sports infrastructure development was also very visible and impressive. These include the magnificent Resource Centre on the Bakau Coastal Highway, construction of multipurpose Sports Centres across the country, and efficient serviceable administrative facilities for the committee. 

Regarding influence and profile, his leadership helped the GNOC command respect within the Olympic Movement, helping the GNOC to host the Zonal Association of National Olympic Committee of Africa(ZANOCA) General Assembly in 1998, the ANOCA General Assembly in 2003 and the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly in 2008.

Abdoulie was a dedicated Muslim and provided exceptional leadership as the president of the Pipeline Mosque Foundation.
