I first met him when he was my family’s Republican precinct captain in the Austin neighborhood. Later when I was old enough to vote and in grad school I interviewed him for a paper I was writing about the changing dynamic in the Austin neighborhood. Years later when he became Regional Director for Region 5 of the U. S. Department of Labor I had frequent meetings with him in my capacity as president of Local 648 of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represented many of the employees in Region 5. My respect for him grew dramatically during this time as he was always willing to find ways to improve the working conditions of Region 5 employees without eroding management rights. He indeed was great man and I will always remember him fondly
