His Life

A Gifted Self Taught Musician

August 8, 2015

Al was an awesome guitar player since he was a teen. He would take his stepdad's guitar out whenever his stepdad was gone and taught himself how to play by ear. He was in a contest on WDBC radio in the 1950's which he won. His prize was a trophy and a trip to Nashville. In Nashville he met Chet Atkins and played with his band. He played the nightclubs in Chicago for many years, along with John Lundberg, who was also from Rapid River. When he moved to California he continued to play at many nightclubs and bars. He recorded a record "How Many Hearts Have You Broken Dear?". He partied with many well know country music celebrities. He was never picky about who he played with as long as he was able to play. There were many times when pots and pans, ironing boards, and children's drum sets were untilized for his impromtu jam sessions. He instilled a love for music in many and you were blessed if you heard him play.
