Amaka : From Cradle to Her Creator

September 3, 2016

Amaka Onyemaechi Chiwuike-Uba was born 42 years ago in Otolo Nnewi, Anambara State, to late Ebele Edna and Charles C. Okoye (Mgbo) of Egbu, Umuenem, Otolo Nnewi.

The second child of her parents, Amaka obtained her primary education at Modupe Primary School, Folagoro, Lagos, Nigeria. She then attended the Igbobi Girls High School, Shomolu, Lagos, Nigeria, where she obtained her Senior School Certificate. She continued her higher education at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus where she received a Bachelor of Science (BSc Hons.) degree in Marketing in 2001. She went on to complete her post-graduate studies, obtaining an MBA degree in Marketing from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus in 2008.

Academically, Amaka was so bright and determined; hence, her decision to enroll for a PhD programme. Unfortunately, her sudden transition abruptly terminated that process and dream.

When she got married into the family of Mark Uba, it didn't take her long to adapt and endear herself to the family. She didn't stop there. Going to see her mother in-laws was a pleasurable task for her. It was common knowledge that Amaechi (as she was fondly called by her in-laws) will be the first to get to even her husband's extended relations immediately she gets to the village. One would have had problems knowing the difference between her and the daughters of the family.

Amaka is truly one of the most inspiring women, very creative, determined, skillful and focused. Her hospitality and love for strangers was jaw-dropping and unparalleled. Her neighbors and those who came in contact with her will attest to the fact that she never knew the difference between the rich and the poor. Her educational background was never flung on the faces of people whom she dealt with.

She espoused some of the African and Christian family values like humility and wives honoring their husbands. She found things for herself and defended the faith during the era where women were just content to be told what to do and think and ravaged by the quest for materialism. Her love for God and the downtrodden was unique. As a human, she wasn't without blemish but whenever she felt offended, she felt it better to let the other party know instead of keeping malice or bearing grudges.

In fulfillment of her ministry, she made hospital visitation part of her weekly activities. During such visitations, she prayed and in some cases paid hospital bills of patients who were unable to settle their bills. Amaka was a prayer warrior and winner and believed so much in the power of praise.

Amaka was very industrious and engaged in any legitimate business to support her family. She believed that no woman is expected to be idle if she must be seen to play her supportive role to her family. She worked in some companies in Lagos and Enugu before she decided to start her own businesses. She mentored so many young women. Before her transition unto glory, she sat on the Board of some companies as a Director.

Amaka transited unto eternal glory in the early hours of Monday, July 4th 2016 leaving behind indelible footprints in the sands of time, with four young children, a husband and host of other relations to mourn her.
