In life, Bruce was constantly surrounded by his family either celebrating milestones such as weddings and birthdays or just having a chat over his much-loved morning coffee. His impact on our lives was enormous, whether he was sharing stories of his youth, the wisdoms he gained in life, or was debating the “big issues” such as religion or politics. Life with Bruce Sinclair was never dull!
Bruce has had an extraordinary career as an Australian Civil Engineer. He earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at the University of Sydney in 1948 and studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as one of Australia's first Fulbright Scholars in 1951.
Bruce founded
Sinclair and Knight with his friend Jack Knight in the early 60s. Bruce spent
26 years as the first CEO establishing the firm as a major technical and
professional consultancy in Australia and South-East Asia.
Since retiring
in 1990, Bruce was the founding Chairman of RedR Australia, an organisation
that deploys Australian Engineers and other professionals to assist the UN and
other humanitarian organisations in their disaster relief work in any part of
the world.
He is an
Honorary Fellow and Past President of Engineers Australia and has
served as the Chair of "Canberra Friends of Dili" a community-based
NGO in the ACT which has been instrumental in developing strong ties with the
Dili community in East Timor.
Bruce was
awarded the Peter Nicol Russell Medal for outstanding services to Engineers Australia in 1996 and appointed a Member of the Order of Australia
for Services to Engineering in 1980.
Throughout his
life, he worked tirelessly for many causes in which he believed deeply
including Rotary, The Salvation Army, and The Smith Family. He is also a
Foundation Member of the National Arboretum of Australia.
His family wishes to send
special thanks to the staff at Arcare Maroochydore for their care and
compassion. He often referred to Arcare as his 5-star hotel.
Bruce, you will forever be
missed and loved but will never be forgotten
