Moving on

November 13, 2014

Bertie and Carl founded several businesses in their lifetime; including Woodlands Graphics, B.C., and the Bloom Room. They also traveled extensively; visiting Egypt, Germany, the Bahamas, and various European countries. Bertie continued to travel even after Carl passed away. She traveled to China in 2013 with her daughter Kathleen and Kathleen's husband, Charles. She had to get permits to fly in China because she was over 80 years old.

Over the years, Bertie and Carl moved around Texas, They left Houston in the 1990's to go to Corpus Christi, TX. They remained there until Carl passed and Bertie moved to the Village of Gleannloch Farms in Spring, TX. She remained active in her many hobbies which included flower arranging, sewing, soapmaking, and baking.

Bertie was always very active in charities and churches throughout her life; notably Bokenkamp Childrens' Shelter of Corpus and Lutheran Social Services of the South in Austin. In 2001, their youngest daughter died in the flooding from Tropical Storm Alison in Houston. Bertie's response to this devastating blow was to found the Kristie Lee Tautenhahn Foundation.

Early Years

November 13, 2014

Bertie was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. She was the youngest of three daughters born to Edward and Adeline Rahn Weiss. She went to Concordia in River Forest, IL. She left Concordia to teach in Houston, TX  at St. John's Lutheran at the age of 19. She met Carl Herman Tautenhahn, Jr. there and they were married June 4, 1950 at St. John's. Over the years Bertie taught at several Lutheran schools in and around Houston including Our Savior, Our Redeemer, and St. Matthew (downtown Houston).

In 1954, Carl and Bertie moved to Westfield, TX where she taught briefly at St. Matthew in Westfield. The family continued to grow to a total of five children, known as the 5 K's : Kathleen, Karen, Karl, Kandace and Kristie.  Back then FM1960 was 2 lanes, HWY 45 was four lanes and the grocery store was the Big T. Watching the daily mail delivery being thrown off the train from Houston was one of the most exciting events of the day.
