Fire Assignment

December 31, 2011

Brandon was in the same class with my son, Dave.  He was the class president.  His Grandmother, Pat, was a regular at Monday Night Bingo which I worked for Rural Deltana Fire Department.  After Brandon graduated and I retired from teaching, we both went to work for the Division of Forestry.

In 2008 I became a dispatcher at Delta Area Forestry where Brandon was a seasoned fire fighter.  It was a fairly slow season in Alaska and in the fall Brandon and I both took fire assignments in Oregon.  We flew out on the red eye out of Fairbanks together and landed in Eugene about 8 in the morning.  We each picked up a rental car and were off to our assignments.  Before checking in, I decided to have a nice breakfast.  Heading generally toward downtown Eugene where the dispatch center was; I found a pancake house and pulled into the parking lot.  As I am being seated, Brandon walked through the door.  I motioned him over.  We shared a meal and a fair amount of coffee.  Afterward we were off to our assignments and I didn’t see Brandon until the next spring.  It was the only assignment that we did together and was a happier time.

A life too short and an ending too sad:  I will miss our random encounters.

A few years back I was helping the local high school host a prom and there was no money for a dj. We kicked around some ideas, but it looked like I was going to have to be the dj for the prom. My daughters swore they wouldn't attend the prom if I was the dj and I didn't blame them. But I recalled that my daughters and son and their friend were always talking about Brandon Krebs and the great music he played at parties. So I called Krebs, and sure enough, he was there and agreed to be the dj for the prom for a nominal fee. He would have done it for free if needed. Brandon Custer and I showed him the equipment and how we it worked and a star was born. He soon improved on our feeble methods and became the premier dj for our area because he was the best part of any party. He djed my daughter's wedding and volunteered to dj my son's wedding in Mukilteo Washington this summer. We are heartbroken and miss him more than words can adequately describe. Love you so much Brandon...

The supersie

My brother Ty called me about four years ago saying I had to take some time off work, because he had tickets to a concert that he knew I would want to see, also flying me down to do so. Like anyone, I said yes. So I'm get ready for this trip, and I get a call from Brandon asking me if I'd like a ride to the airport, and I was down with that because who wants to take a cab, when they could ride with a homie like Brandon! So we get to the airport, and I'm like thanks a lot bro, I'll see you when I get back. But Brandon had different plans in mind, he pulled out a suitcase and said (lets do the dam thing!!) It was the best trip i'v ever had! That's the guy Brandon was, spountainious as hell. I love him for it, and always will! He will walk beside me forever, and I know that because I can feel him right now. -Nelson
