Never---A Poem by Cortenna Rascoe
August 17, 2011
Never will I see you run around, play, break, misplace things, and then say, “No, it wasn’t me!”
Never will you let your 4-legged friends, Johnny and Polo, run out the gate. I can see you shaking your head saying, “Mom, I don’t know who left the gate open, but it wasn’t me!”
Never will I hear you ask, “Mom, do you want me to make you eggs or a cup of tea?”
Never will there be a preparation for a first day of school.
Never will I see you date.
Never will I see you drive your first car.
Never will I see you go to your prom or graduate.
Never will I hear your voice change from a boy to a man.
Never again will I hear that loud exciting laughter.
Never will I hear that sweet sound of you singing or playing the bass guitar.
Never will I hear another compliment from you or see you run ahead of me to open the car door for your Mother.
Never will I kiss those sweet cheeks of yours, and then in return you kiss mine.
Never will I look into those beautiful eyes and wonder what you are thinking.
Never will I see you with a football helmet and snow boots ready to play baseball or put out a fire.
Cordell, never will I stop loving you. And when we meet on that celestial shore, never shall we ever depart again, never.
I will miss you eternally; rest on my precious baby boy. I will eternally love you.
