Please join us in celebrating the life and memory of Cathy Popiel.

We invite you to share your memories of her in the Stories section (see tabs above), post photos in the Gallery section, and leave thoughts in the Tributes section below.  All entries are welcome!  In light of these unprecedented times, this site will provide a way to gather together virtually to reflect on lives and memories shared and to celebrate a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.  We will keep this site available, so please return to add more memories and to experience the stories of others.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, we request that you donate to the Atlanta Botanical Garden or Emory Healthcare or to the charity of your choice.  The ABG holds special memories for our family.  And we are truly thankful for the care and hard work of the professionals at Emory Healthcare that helped Cathy in her battles against both cancer and COVID-19.

To Jan, Lynn, Kevin, Lauren, Austin, and all the family -- I am sorry for the earthly loss of your mother, wife, and grandmother, but know that heaven is celebrating. Cathy was a big part of my childhood as Lynn and I spent our growing up and college years as good friends. Cathy was always smiling. I remember camping together as families and how much she enjoyed that family time. I was always welcome at your home and made comfortable by the joyful, supportive presence in your family. I'm happy she was able to fight to have that extra time with family as I know it was most important to her. I pray for peace for each of you as you navigate this time and your grief. May you be wrapped in the love and peace that comes from God as you celebrate the life of Cathy.

Every time I saw your mom she always had a smile on her face. So was so happy to see her grandkids and witness the person/mother/wife Lynn had become. I hope the memories of her life bring you comfort. Big hugs to the entire family.
Much love, Karen

Cathy and Jan opened their home to me when I first came to Texas and allowed me to get on my feet! I'll never forget it since I was given some time to allow me to follow the path I have been on in life!

I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy. It was a privilege to work with Cathy at Theiss Elementary. She was an excellent teacher and encouraged her students to always put forth their best efforts. It is obvious that she loved and was loved by her family. May your memories of her warm your heart.

To Jan and Lynn....I'm sending my sincere sympathies to your family. I taught with Cathy at Theiss for a number of years. She was an integral part of the 4th Grade team, for sure. It sounds as though you were able to spend precious time with her. I know she will be missed!

Jan and Lynn , the Theiss family is saddened by the loss of such a wonderful lady.  I am so happy she had some really great times the past couple of months. Cathy and I had many fun years team teaching at Theiss Elementary. She always had a beautiful smile. I enjoyed the stories about Lynn who was the apple of her eye and her husband Jan the ex hockey player. She felt so blessed and loved by both of them. Keeping your family in my prayers and thank you for sharing all the great times you all had together.

Cathy always worked hard at the water aerobic exercises, even when some of us were goofing off. She didn't let the hard work get in the way of friendly conversations, though. I will miss her a lot.

A beautiful smile that radiated and made everyone feel welcome - that is the defining characteristic that I remember most from Mrs. Popiel.

I loved how she beamed when she saw her daughter and grandkids. She was so proud of them!

Lynn and Mr. Popiel, may the beautiful memories shared in this tribute and all the others you have bring you joy and comfort. I am so sorry for your loss.

Lynn, I'm so sorry to hear about your mom passing :( She was such a friendly and wonderful person to be around! Every time we came over for one of the kids' birthdays or any other event, she always made a point to talk to me and ask about my job, my kids, etc. She was easy to talk to and she always made me feel welcome. She had a bright light that the world will miss, but it will carry on through you, since you are so friendly and welcoming as well. I'm glad you had a little extra time with her and were able to do most of the things she loved the most over the last couple of months. I know she was proud of you and will miss all of you, but she'll be smiling down on you from above. Love and hugs during this difficult time!

We will miss Cathy dearly and were so happy to get to know her over the last decade. She was so friendly and outgoing. I remember at our first meeting I knew Kevin had really lucked out in the in-law department! And since then we've shared many big and small events together. Wishing our move out of Atlanta and Jan & Cathy's move into Atlanta hadn't happened at the same time so we could've shared more of these! Her joy and love for her family were always so evident. I will remember her for her warm conversations, her great book recommendations, her love and pride for Austin and Lauren, and her support and happiness for me as I became a mom. Thanks for sharing Mimi with our family. Sending our love and prayers always. Rafo & Alli, Gabriel & Camila

Cathy was a joy to share pool time and advice concerning her vast experience in real estate. Alex and I sponsored their Y membership to both our advantages. She was a brave lady and we will miss her.

Her Life
July 5, 2020
Born on May 4, 1950, to Robert and Marjorie French in Evanston, Illinois, Cathy’s childhood was filled with family, friends, and adventures with her brothers Lenny and Kenny (now all grown up to Leonard/Len and Kenneth/Ken).  She would frequently recall stories of her mother welcoming her home after school and inquiring about her day, of happy times spent with grandparents GaGa and Pa, and of summer trips to Tomahawk, WI and the annual ritual of individually buying a 5 cent ice cream (to avoid sales tax).

Cathy graduated from the University of Illinois, whose mascot she jokingly referred to as the Illini-O!  The “O” she would recall was in reference to the zero that regularly followed the school on the scoreboard at football games.  She also loved teasing that her life included bathing in “champagne”, a play on the location of U of I at Urbana-Champaign.

With degree in education in hand, she set out to find that everyone else was also educated in education and there were not jobs to be found.  So she set her sights to the sky and became an airline stewardess (as they were known then) for United Airlines in Chicago.  She enjoyed reminding people that this wasn’t a time of peanuts and water, but that airline travel in her day included delivering hot meals to 100+ travelers – and cleaning them up – on flights from O’Hare to Indianapolis.

It was in Chicago that Cathy met the love of her life Jan…in a laundromat, of all places!  In what seems like the stuff of romantic comedies, Jan (at the time a professional hockey player for the Chicago Cougars), a fellow Cougar teammate, and a team sponsor/supporter met Cathy in line while she was picking up her United uniform and the hockey players their suits.  They invited her to the game that night and after the game, the OTHER hockey player took Cathy out on a date!  Shy Jan finally got up the nerve to ask Cathy out a mere 3 weeks later.

They quickly fell in love and were married in Evanston in 1975.  In the first few years of marriage, they moved frequently with hockey team trades from Chicago to Denver to Houston to Oklahoma City to Phoenix.  Luckily Cathy’s United career and love of travel gave her the flexibility and sense of adventure to roll with the moves.

Ultimately, they made Houston their home, took on “Texas citizenship”, and settled into new careers as a home builder for Jan and real estate broker for Cathy.  In 1980, they welcomed the birth of their daughter Lynn.  Cathy joyfully and lovingly nurtured Lynn and shaped her into the woman she is today.  She loved being a mother – second only to being a grandmother (stay tuned).

In Texas, Cathy finally put that education degree to good use as a grade school teacher.  She taught in Klein ISD in Spring, Texas for 20 years.  She was a dedicated teacher who loved her students and loved her fellow teachers as well.  While teaching was a job, retirement was the dream, and in 2005, Cathy hung up her chalk to join the ranks of people who have ample time for multiple book clubs, Master Gardner classes, aqua aerobics at the Y, and lunches with friends.  Eventually she would convince Jan to retire as well so they could move to Atlanta in 2016 to be close to Lynn, son-in-law Kevin, and (most importantly) to their grandchildren, which brings us to the next chapter.

In 2012, Cathy became a grandmother.  She wasn’t just any grandmother, she was Mimi!  She loved her grandchildren, Austin and Lauren, with every bone of her body, and they loved her equally in return.  Mimi (formerly known as Cathy) would often say her greatest joy in life was watching her grandchildren eat ice cream – which they did almost every time they were together – morning, noon or night!  With trips to the dollar store, playing in the pool, or games around the house, their faces would light up with her sense of humor, laughter and joy that she brought to every moment spent together.  She was just getting into the best strides as Mimi and she will be terribly missed, but Jan, Lynn, and Kevin promise to maintain the cookie/candy stores in the pantry, frequent bowls of ice cream, and memorial trips to the dollar store.

Cathy is survived by Jan, her husband of 45 years, her daughter Lynn, son-in-law Kevin and grandchildren Austin and Lauren as well as by her brothers Len French and Ken French and their families.  We have been blessed by her presence in our lives and are so thankful for the extra days we’ve had following her cancer diagnosis at the beginning of 2020.  She will be truly missed, and we take heart in knowing that she will continue to watch over us from above.

Remarkable Cathy

July 17, 2020
Jan was climbing a ladder to work on our house.  He grinned and said to not tell his wife.  When we met Cathy, we understood.  She was a remarkably caring, kind and steadfast woman, who obviously loved life.  She had taught elementary school, and the patience, curiosity, and joy of teaching young children defined her love of life.  She loved beauty in nature and in her surroundings, and she especially loved and was proud of her family.  She became a master gardener through dedication and study, and she recounted the intelligence and mastery of her daughter Lynn.  She was overjoyed that Lynn found the love of her life, just as Cathy and Jan knew instantly that they were meant to be together.

It has been a pleasure to know and appreciate both Cathy and Jan as true friends.  We will continue to miss Cathy.  Our prayers are with her family.

I had the pleasure to be Cathy’s water aerobics instructor at the Y.  I always looked forward to both her and Jan coming because of both their infectious smiles and positive attitudes.  They both worked out hard in the water but also participated in our “floating cocktail party” in the deep end.  I am so sorry for your loss and know that you will miss this beautiful woman.

Cathy was a lovely person!

I have so enjoyed getting to know Cathy the last year and a half. She was the best neighbor and together we were the backbone of the Parkside Book Club. We were able to attend an author event together with other members and had an enjoyable evening. Cathy and I became close quickly. Her easy manner and strong opinions made it easy for this Yankee to connect with her. She so enjoyed our neighborhood, going to the pool with Austin & Lauren, and doing nature walks at Mason Mill Park.  I am so happy she was able to come home to be with her family, but, selfishly, I wish we would have had more time together. Cathy was a true gem of a person. I will miss her more than I can say. Family, she dearly, dearly loved each one of you. Burt and I send our deepest, most heartfelt condolences. ❤
