His Life
August 10, 2009
Darrell Taft Hayes passed away on August 4, 2009 at St. Rose Hospital in Hayward, CA. He was preceded in death by parents Charles and Helen Hayes, and is survived by sisters Oral, Arleen, and Helen, brothers Charles and Gary, 8 nieces and 3 nephews. A long time resident of Castro Valley, Darrell was born in Bountiful, Utah in 1937, and attended Hayward Union High. While he retired from Humboldt Instrument Company after 33 years of service as a master machinist, his first love was always the design of custom cars and motorcycles. His impeccable sense of style and encyclopedic knowledge of all things mechanical drove him to create literally hundreds of unique and amazing components for prize winning show bikes, custom roadsters, and a wide assortment of projects that would have been impossible without his absolute mastery of his art. Darrell marched to a different drum, and never failed to make an indelible impression on whoever he met. He will be missed by too many people to mention individually. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life this Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at 17760 Madison Avenue, Castro Valley, CA. Note from Helen: When he was a little boy he always wore a holster and toy guns and it earned him the nickname of Pistol Pete. This was SO Darrell. I just want to thank everyone who supported my brother during his illness and let you know that my family and I are eternally grateful.
