The Great Round-up

When I think of the last great round-up,
On the eve of eternity's dawn,
I think of the past of the cowboys
Who have been with us here and are gone.
And I wonder if any will greet me
On the sands of the evergreen shore
With a hearty, "God bless you, old fellow,"
That I've met with so often before.

I think of the big-hearted fellows

Sorry to hear of the passing of Dave. He was a comfort to my husband, BoBo especially when he was so sick in Vancouver.

I first met Dave in 1975 after arriving in the Yukon as a 21 year old 'wet behind the ears' forest officer and an inspector for Dave's logging operation on Tagish lake. Dave went easy on me. I learned much from him and looked forward to visiting Ten Mile Ranch. Our paths crossed years later, only several years ago, working together with one of his business ventures. I'm glad for that.

The 1st year 1965? my father had students on Tagish, we were camped across the lake from Ten Mile, in the rain. On the third day we awoke to find Dave had set up a wall tent and stove for us. What had been miserable became a festival as we got warm and dry. We couldn.t get enough of Dave's stories and soft spoken good humor.
Here was a man I wanted to be like.

When I was 11 years old, I rode with Dave in my grandfather's boat all the way from Ten Mile Ranch to Ben My Chree. It was a great adventure for me, only one of many for my family and me over the years on Tagish Lake. It all started with Dave Harder and his influence has been profound, not just on the Laudon family but for decades of Wisconsin geologists. May he Rest in Peace

I have some wonderful memories of Dave as my brother-in-law. His sense of humour and his giggle are what I will carry with me as there aren't many men who can carry off a giggle as well as he did. He was a man's man and a soft-hearted one who touched us all. We will miss you, Dave. Enjoy your just rewards in peace.

Dear Dave, I remember showing up at your door unannounced in tears. You put on the kettle and listened. You were the adult in my life when I was a teenager with a troubled home. Thank you for loving me and blessing me with your friendship. You were my mentor and I look forward to seeing you again. Until that day I will remember.

Will miss your almost every Sunday phone calls. Glad we had the trip together in 2008 and the time together in Vancouver in 2010. Wish your departure was not quite so abrupt but I know you are free and at peace. Will say my final good byes to you on the top of a mountain because I always cherished your burst of joy everytime I called you from one of those peaks. Love you, Lee-ann
