Now, in my 90th year of life on this planet, I have much to celebrate, much to be humble about as I have been lucky, and much to be grateful for. David became my friend and colleague when he came to me for percussion lessons in 1966, my first year teaching at Stanford.
He was a graduate student in Cognitive Psychology and wanted to know what I was doing with computers at the Stanford AI Lab. I explained my work in computer sound synthesis and composition. I then asked him to tell me what he knew about perception. He knew a lot, so we learned from one another, which continued over the years; I, more from him! Our friendship became ever more rich through the years, as he advised and nurtured many composers and researchers over the years. Among his first students at CNMAT was Matt Wright, who credits David as the(!) major influence in his professional life, and who just a few months ago was appointed Executive Director of CCRMA to help Chris Chafe run CCRMA and its future. So David's legacy was transported to many places, and now with Matt Wright as his agent, back to where David and I began!

David was one of the kindest people I have met. He had a gentle demeanor yet his music was fiercely impactful. When I heard is music in concert I often went away scratching my head looking for what it meant. Stepping back I feel his music made my mind bigger and I appreciate all music more having heard it, and known David.

Thinking of David always brings his kindness and generosity as well as his great sense of humor to mind. His brilliance as an inventor and musician goes without saying. He will be sorely missed by his many friends.

Thinking of you all as you gather in Berkeley this weekend to remember David. I am meeting in Paris with Aaron Einbond and we will improvise some electronic music together in a basement studio at IRCAM in his honor. David, from the heart, thank you for your extraordinary gentleness and intense musicality.

I followed the Computer music training 40 days at IRCAM during the summer of 1981 when David Wessel was the Director of Pedagogy. I remember his teaching, and I believe that teaching allows me to be efficient with a computer. He gave me the foundation to master computer music and general. If not, here's my contribution, a web page that I have dedicated to David Wessel :

Such an expansive spirit that was so inclusive and curious, teaching everyone around him with effortless grace and deep understanding. He brought so much to so many, opening paths of ideas and expression. Onward go those vibrations as they radiate out through us all

Computer Music Journal & expressive musical interfaces

March 20, 2015

When I was starting the Computer Music Journal in 1976, David's encouragement meant a lot to me. He was supportive to many of us as we explored the physics, math and psychoacoustics of timbre and the design of more expressive music instrument interfaces and controllers, at a time when their was little financial support for computer music.  David was a considerate, intelligent and kind musician/researcher with a fun sense of humor.  -- John Snell
