I'm thinking of you...Maureen, if you see this, I'd love to hear from you. I'm so sorry this is how I found you...it's strange...my baby brother John left us in 2006...I really would like to hear from you. Just realized..it's Violet Shannon. Hope you remember.

He is the best teacher I've ever had. He was really funny and we all enjoyed being in his class; he was like a wise friend. Thank you, and we miss you, Mr. Llewellyn.

I looked so forward to David's company, his music, his intellect, and his kindness embedded in a strong wit. His gift to me of "Alina," by Estonian composer, Avro Part, has been played so many times it is now broken in song five. This CD has been played literally thousands of times now, and I will play it thousands more, always thinking of my friend! Rest well, and know you were loved!

When scheduling students into David's class, I always advised them to sit near his desk because some of his funniest comments were the ones he muttered under his breath. It's the reason I didn't sit beside him in staff meetings. They just don't make 'em like that anymore. I'll miss him.

What a shock to lose David so suddenly! I enjoyed his brilliant mind, his scholarly knowledge on many subjects, his nose always in a tome. He worked to raise the bar for his students, sending them to our library to find existentialist novels. They started off bewildered, and then began to see the light. His wry sense of the absurd could always be counted on to bring a chuckle to my day.

David was my baby brother and I loved him dearly. No baby could have been more joyfully greeted when he was born, and I became known in the family as his second mother. He was not supposed to leave us first. I never expected to have to face such sorrow. I will always remember him for his kind and caring nature, his curiosity, enthusiasm, thirst for knowledge, and appetite for life.

Dave was the father I wish I had, a mentor, raconteur, a rogue and a friend. He was interested, engaged and amused by the world and he wasn't afraid to face it, rush headlong into it and let it crash about his ears in a glorious cacophony. He was a real modern renaissance man and we will not see his like again.

We met at the urinals of our junior high and remained close friends since that time. We shared all our darkest secrets.  He taught me how to read, to think. Whether in a psychedelic thrall in 1960s Yorkville, or over a beer in a Bukowskiesque tavern, Dave was the sage who put life into perspective for the many troubled souls who sought out his biting erudition and generous wisdom.

To all laughter and getting to a point where we laughed at it all together ... a friend and someone to share life with ... I wish we could have said goodbye ... but it's all hello anyway ... love ... Lee

David was one of my closest and most cherished friends. I’m forever grateful to have had the opportunity to spend so much time with him discussing books and current events, going to the theatre, listening to music, viewing art, and -- not least, of course -- gourmandising, all while having a good laugh at the fundamental absurdity of human existence. He will be dearly missed.

David’s biting and sarcastic humour, his brilliant wit, his amazing mind, and his love of life and all things in excess have provided me with immeasurable joy that will stay with me for the rest of my life. He was a dear and much-cherished friend, a kindred spirit, and an intellectual mentor. I owe so much to him.

I knew Dave since we were 14 in Toronto. Later, we drank wine & listened to jazz with lifelong friend Peter McLaren, when we were all a 'windy boy & a bit." He was witty, sarcastic & erudite even then. By l992 we went to storytelling & poetry nights, but lost touch. I thought of him as family. He was iconic to my youth. Sadly missed. "Gone to the light." Love ya, Dave. KR

David was a friend whose learning I frankly came to depend on. I often asked him to clarify various points -- about literature, antiquity, music, art history, politics, economics -- and he would always reply with both humour and encyclopaedic accuracy, sharing his real delight in the record of humanity. He would slip in his lessons, while making me laugh. I have lost one of my teachers.
