Dear Sarah, Hannah, Ethan and Allison,
I still can’t believe he’s gone. I can only imagine how tough these past 10 days have been for you all and my heart pours out for you. Uncle David had such a way of being the fun, loving uncle that I strive to be, he could lighten to mood and make great conversation any day of the week. I’ll never forget those trips up to Lake Erie growing up with the Olenik’s, truly highlights of my childhood. He will always be missed ♥️

We were so heartbroken to hear about David’s passing. He was always so warm to me and my girls whenever we were together. Lynn Avenue won’t be the same! Please know that we love you and are thinking about all of you. We’re praying for God’s comfort to sustain this wonderful family.

We are so saddened and sorry to hear of the loss of David. He was a kind soul and his smile will forever live on Lynn Avenue! I was thinking back on some memories I have of him...and a few recent ones came to mind. I remember attending Rachel & Greg’s wedding last March, the last time most of us attended an event of that nature, and I remember giving David multiple elbow bump greetings as we all navigated the early phases of Covid-19. I’m so thankful our family had that weekend together to laugh, dance and enjoy each other’s company before the world shut down as we know it. Another sweet memory that came to mind was last summer at Lakeside when David took my boys and me up to the farmers’ market in his golf cart. We walked around together and he even bought my boys cupcakes. It was a sweet gesture. Please know that you, Sarah, your kids and your precious granddaughter are in our continued thoughts and prayers. We love you. We are a strong family and we will wrap our arms around all of you during this unimaginable time.

Sarah, Hannah, Ethan, Allison and Eloise,
I struggle to find any words adequate to convey my sympathies to each of you. David meant so much to us in so many different ways! I first met David when he and Sarah were students at BGSU. Bob and I lived in BG as well. Sarah would visit us and one evening we decided to order pizza. Domino’s Pizza! Well the delivery man rang our bell and when we opened the door, there stood David Olenik. Sarah said she had a class with him so we tipped generously! She also said he was cute and she thought he was interested in her. It wasn’t long after that these two were a couple and became soulmates! We all know their love story. We know that two wonderful children came out of that love, and now a precious granddaughter! David shines through them! David had every outstanding quality God grants us! An amazing person! I will cherish our walks to Dockside worship and sitting in the back! I loved his sense of humor! You had to listen carefully as he could slide some of those one-liners in! I am so grateful for David accepting me for who I am and always making me feel welcome and loved! He will be forever missed.
     Love, Martha

Sarah, Ethan, Allison, Hannah, and Eloise,

Greg and I are so sorry for your terrible loss. David has always been a part of our Lakeside family and we always looked forward to the first few days of the season when we could all get together after the winter. While there are so many memories we cherish with our families, I will always remember David walking the dogs or coming back from long bike rides. I know he will be watching our little baby girls experience their first Lakeside summer together. We love you all and will be praying for you.

Dear Sarah, Ethan, Hannah, Allison and Eloise,
I am heartbroken to hear of David's passing. We have been and will continue to be praying for God's peace and comfort for you all during this very difficult time. Although we didn't know David well, we all feel so blessed to be part of such a loving and close-knit extended family. Even though we only visited Lakeside periodically, the love and deep connections between our family is evident and makes Lakeside a place where even our youngest kids know they are loved. David loved well, was well loved, and will be dearly missed! Ben, Vanessa, Caleb, Abigail, Mya, and Evelyn

Dear Sarah, Ethan, Hannah, Allison and Eloise,
Sending our love and sympathy...our families will miss David so very much. Our view across the street at Lakeside was always graced by his presence. Reading on the porch, walking Sophie, talking to Ryan and Ethan on the porch, or whoever stopped by to open the screen door with the silver knife...Well, he was always there, a strong, kind, quietly reassuring presence across the street. David was generous in his love, we were especially grateful when Ryan moved to Cleveland alone, and David would include him in business functions or golf outings. Ryan and Dana were as at home on your porch as they were at ours, playing games, watching your TV when we didn't have one, or just hanging out, sometimes moving over to our house for the later hours of the evening.  Words are insufficient and others have already said them for us, but please know that our hearts are heavy laden; and we pray that God's love and ours will surround you as the community who loved him grieves with you.
Until we see you and with all our love, David and Rebecca

I will miss David in a major way. I was blessed to work with Dave for a number of years at FirstMerit Bank and worked very closely with David nearly daily as the credit officer for our lending teams. Working alongside him on so many real estate lending initiatives, credit committees and the formation of critical banking policy, I found Dave to be an extraordinary banker, and more importantly, an extraordinarily decent man. Knowing David, what I will always remember most though is his great sense of humor, he was always one to inject the most witty banter into any work or social setting. In recent years, I looked forward to our lunches a few times each year and when David, and a handful of other former bankers privileged to work with him, got together to play a round of golf each of the last few years, I made a special effort to make sure I was the guy who rode alongside David in the cart as I knew I would spend a day laughing and sharing the best stories for 18 holes! He was a very good man, father, grandfather and friend and I will miss him. God speed!

There are no words to express how sad we are with David’s passing. He was such an amazing man, husband, father, cousin, friend and a faithful servant of our Lord. He will truly be missed! We live across the street from Sarah and David in Lakeside during the summer and I am Sarah’s first cousin. We have so many wonderful memories of David....4th of July celebrations, porch sitting and conversations, dockside church services, dinners together, painting rocks, Put-In-Bay, Bay Point beach, family reunions, watching David take off on his bike or golf cart, laughing and of course David hiding from us because he had enough “family” time for a while. I would always go in their cottage when the air conditioner was on because we didn’t have any at our cottage. I have known David since he became a member of the family when he and Sarah started dating. He was loved by everyone. David was a father figure to our children, loved our grandchildren and taught everyone what it meant to be loyal to family! He has left a legacy and memories we will never forget. Rest In Peace David. You will always be in our thoughts!
To Sarah, Ethan, Hannah and Allison...
God promises:
“The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in Spirit.”
Psalm 34:18
We love you,
Kevin and Ellen

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Sarah, Ethan, Allison, and Hannah. We have been praying for all of you since learning of David’s death. We hope you have felt God’s comforting arms around you as you grieve. With love and sympathy, Barby and Steve (cousins on Sarah’s side of the family)
Here are a few of our memories of David:
The majority of our memories of David are from our summers at Lakeside (we have lived across the street from Sarah and David on Lynn Avenue). David was always so calm and loving with his family. His love and respect for Sarah and his children was exemplary. We loved watching the family walk all together down to the lakefront. David had a special way with little children too. He made our grandchildren feel welcome when they (constantly) wanted to come across the street to 222 Lynn to pet all of the animals. David would have cute conversations with our grandkids that made them feel important and grown up. David will be sorely missed on Lynn Avenue as a cousin, a great neighbor, and a kind friend. Because of the way David lived his life, we are reminded of this verse from the Bible: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Colossians 3:12

David was all of 6 yrs old, when I first met him. He was a precocious little boy, with his blonde hair and big wide eyes, often with a mildly mischievous grin on his face. When he entered his teen years, David became a big fan of the rock group "Kiss", and proudly displayed a huge poster of them on his bedroom wall. When Jeff (David's older brother), would bring me to the house, I'd see that crazy poster every time I walked past David's doorway! It was rather amusing, albeit in a strange way. : )

The years passed. "Little David" went off to college where he met Sarah, who would become his wife and partner for life. He was matter of fact about his devotion to her. He loved his Sarah and that was that! After they married and had Ethan and Hannah, David's love and devotion simply grew to envelop them all! He loved being a husband, he loved being a father, and it absolutely showed! Later, when Ethan brought Allison into the family, David and Sarah loved her as their own.

Sarah and I both know that when you are married to an Olenik, you have married into something very special, with their characteristic strong love of family, kindness, honesty, steadfastness, and always-always-always the willingness to go the extra mile and to be there for you, No. Matter. What.

David, my brother, I am blessed to have known you. God speed.

My dear brother David , who brightened my life since he was born. I was 8 and thought he was my real babydoll . I carried him with me everywhere. Me, Robin and David shared a room as kids .
He grew up to be fine husband, Christian man, father, uncle (my kids love and respect him) and successful business man. I stand in awe at how God had worked in his life.

Going to the Oleniks on Marmore Ave. in the late 60s was a sweet mixture of sounds and smells, sisters outnumbered by brothers, Mr. O always fixing something, Mrs. O cooking, washing and carrying stuff. Grand Central Station
of a family. In the middle of the orchestra was this virtuoso of a poster child,
beautiful, with wheels so fast he put the roadrunner to shame, smiling and giggling his way into every heart who had the pleasure of his trusting countenance. His name was David. He became the husband and father and grandfather he was destined to be. You can see him in them. It's not goodnight for David it's good morning as his quote from Hebrews illustrates.

Lakeside memories with David

February 22, 2021
I remember the first time I met David and it was back in 2009. I was dating Cullen McGeady at the time and Sarah and David were one of the first families that accepted me immediately into their family with open arms. Plus the Olenik‘s always had the best junk food!!!! Haha! I would remember David making us pizza rolls and we would all share them and hangout for hours in the living room or on their front porch at Lakeside, talking about anything and everything! David was always so sweet and hilarious with me! He would crack jokes and would give me the best bear hugs! He also would pick up that I always didn’t like to play card games and would make sure I felt included by simply talking with me, which I appreciated a lot!!! Anyone could see that David was the best daddy and it was very apparent how much he loved his family!!!! He loved Sarah, his children, family and friends with every grain in his body, no denying that. We cherished the times David would take Cullen and Ethan golfing and take me on boat rides. David was always so thoughtful too! When I was painting rocks in Lakeside, he would bring me lemonade and follow up with a funny remark, “Now you better paint us a rock!” Haha! Gosh....I love David and miss him dearly....I see so much of David in Ethan and Hannah. They both have loving hearts and are generous to others, like David was. David lives on through our hearts but also through his children. David will never ever be forgotten because he left one of the most loving legacies behind. God rest his soul! We love you, David and the whole Olenik family! Xoxo, Adrienne, Cullen & Iris
