ForeverMissed

This memorial website was created in memory of my beloved Uncle, Donald Lindo, 89, born on August 6, 1928 and passed away peacefully at his home in Kingston, Jamaica, on December 5, 2017.

Per his wishes, he was cremated and his ashes were laid to rest on Dec. 9 at the St. Andrew Parish Church columbarium.

Donald lived a life of kindness and love unlike anyone I have ever known, and he dedicated his life to the preservation of history and genealogy of Jamaicans all around the globe.

I will never know the full extent of his impact on the world, but hopefully your contributions of stories and recollections (ironically, he was writing an autobiographical book, called, "Recollections" when he passed) will reveal the various facets of his life as we all reminisce and celebrate the life of this dearly loved man...

Gone too soon, but never to be forgotten...

You will be remembered forever, Uncle Don...

I met Donald in 1990 when he came into NCB Knutsford Blvd and asked for his chequebooks. Of course he had to tell me his name, Lindo, which of course is also my family name. We struck up a conversation and we had remained friends since then. I live nearby so I visited him often and also helped him with computer repair as that is my business. He encouraged me with researching my family, a lot I had done before we met. Some Lindos who were friends of mine turned out to be his cousins. We never found our common link. I had dinner sometimes with him, Raymond & Alison. They were a quirky little bunch. Donald was matter of fact about Ray's passing but I know he missed him a lot. I walked past Donald's house a few weeks ago and wondered how he was doing, hadn't heard from him for a while. I've been so busy with Chess tournaments. Now I know. Life has been kind to me I have met some quality people on my journey and Donald was a true gentleman. It is rare that we come across such great souls and Donald was remarkable. His dedication to Genealogical studies and other historical pursuits are worthy to duplicate. I just wish I could have said goodbye. Or better farewell old friend I will see you again. Cheers Don. Peace.

Donald I first met you through friends in the sixties. You were always
very kind and helpful, and I will always remember how you went out
of your way to help people of all ages.
You were a true friend and will be greatly missed.

Donald was a gentle man. He embodied all that is best about the Jamaica of yesteryear when good manners and consideration for others were the core values Upon which relationships were built. It was always a joy to welcome him to my church, Temple of Light Centre for Spiritual Living and to encounter him in the bank looking after the affairs of the many elderly people whose affairs he took care of.
I bless his onward journey in the Light.

The news of his passing caused a sadness that will forever remain with me. It is so true.....he was indeed the kind and generous man and was always there to lift your spirits when things were no going so good.  I will miss you Donald.. God bless...your devoted friend....Stan

We met as strangers but became so much more. Finding out that we had Sue in common was such a joyful coincidence. I so enjoyed our talks about genealogy and your passion for it. We will miss your lovely smile and gentle ways. What a loss to the world but you're now reunited with your brother. Rest on sweet soul. Much Love, Nadine xo

I grew up in Jamaica with my cousin Donald. He gave me my first camera when he upgraded to a better one. We climbed Blue Mountain Peak with friends. We went rafting down the Rio Grande. We shared so many interests even though he was 8 years older than me. My Mother was Auntie Carmen's sister. Our family came to live in Barbados when I was 16-17yrs old.  I got married to Keith in 1958. We went back to Jamaica twice. Donald lent us his cottage at Bamboo Cove once, and another time he drove us to where our Mothers grew up. He was always kind and helpful to everyone. We will miss him. Love, Barbara & Keith

I visited my dear cousin Donald in Jamaica a number of times wth my two sons John and Ian and all my grandchildren: Jessica, Heidi, Max, Alice and Thomas. Donald always met up with us and kindly showed us the sights of the island of my birth. We were all so delighted to meet with him and to meet another cousin (Angela Fraser). Together they always made our Jamaican trips kind , friendly and memorable

I first met Donald and his mother in the 1950s when we moved to town from Highgate and lived next door to them in Linstone Crescent. I was only a child at the time, and being from the country I wasn’t used to neighbours, terrified of them mostly. But I remember Donald and Mrs. Lindo were so warm and welcoming, always ready with a smile and a wave, and a cold drink if I went round. Every time I have seen Donald that kindness in his face was always there, and a twinkle of fun in his eyes. He was the most good natured and kindest person you could wish to meet, and I am forever grateful to him for the friendship and loving support he gave my uncle Fred throughout their lives - a friendship that started in school days and endured for life. The world is a better place for him and he will be missed. A fine spirit.

I met Donald for the first time at my mother's funeral in December 1999. I knew of him and that the Lindo family & de Roux family were connected. He encouraged me to do research into my family history and in fact gave me a copy his first published "Genealogy of Jamaica". That set me on the road and he helped me so much over the years. He was very encouraging and helpful. He will be sadly missed.

I remember the extraordinary lifelong friendship which Donald had with my late Uncle Fred and the wonderful, wonderful times they shared and had together. He was always so kind and thoughtful - and I remember my Uncle saying that he and Donald had never had cross words in all the years. This is a tribute to the kind and selfless person Donald was - always sharing and always giving. I will miss our (too infrequent) chats and am glad that his passing was peaceful. The world is without a wonderful soul who enjoyed a full life. Rest in peace

I first met my cousin Donald when I was 10 years old when my mummy and I went to Jamaica for three months. I remember he had a puppy named Prince who was very lively. One day Donald was my ‘baby-sitter’ when mummy and Donald’s mummy Auntie Carmen went out for a couple of hours. He was very patient and looked after me well. I was determined to return to Jamaica one day and my dream came true when Desmond and I went in 1988 and we stayed at Donald’s apartment for three weeks. Again he was wonderful and caring. He escorted us to our grannie’s old home, mummy’s school and family graves. He helped me to set up our family research history. A few years later we made another trip to Jamaica and as always Donald made sure we enjoyed our holiday which we did. He and I kept in touch over the years and he always mentioned his lovely cats. He will always be remembered. Rest In Peace dear Donald.

Donald cared for my mother, Alison Lindo, after Raymond’s passing, and up to her passing on June 23, 2016. Donald made sure that all her needs were met and that there was always someone to tend to her if he had to go out. He was such a busy person, so I am very grateful that he was able to comply with his brother’s wishes for her care, especially as I was unable to be there for her. Donald also dealt with some personal matters on my behalf and was always thorough and would go the extra mile. His passing, which came as quite a surprise, has left a void for me, in connecting with Jamaica. He will certainly be missed.

Donald - the Dougall family around the globe owes you thanks for starting us off with our basic genealogy. It has led to great grand children and their descendents getting to know the families of Dougalls from Lesmahagow in Scotland - and now in Jamaica, Canada, USA, West Indies, South Africa, Viet Nam, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. Some of this by e-mail and some with face to face meetings. God Bless you in your rest. Dick Dougall

You have always selflessly been there for everyone in your life, and I am so thankful that I was able to be with you in your time of need, Uncle Don. Although you were taken way too quickly, I am grateful to know that you did not suffer at all. Until we meet again... Love, Sue

Uncle Don, it’s hard to believe it’s been five years since you left us… I remember that night so clearly - you were so peaceful as you waited for God to call you home. You were the best uncle anyone could ask for - so very patient and thoughtful, and I have such fond memories of visiting your beach cottage and Flamstead home as a child and later as an adult. You were such a wealth of knowledge, and such a gracious host every time we’d come back to Jamaica to visit, even earlier that year in 2017 when I brought Jordan and Preston down for Jordan’s first visit to Jamaica. You were obviously tired, but made sure that we saw so much! Thank you for always being there and for being such a wonderful uncle!

I have just had a most enjoyable experience.
Years ago Donald gave me a DVD on Milling Springs.
He had produced this DVD in 2001! He had established
a cafe at Milling Springs, just above Gordon Town.In the DVD
I saw many old friends, including Fred Duquesnay and Ross Murray. All three were great friends.
I first heard the Ride of the Valkerys on Ross hi fi system!
Donald help me in more ways than I could describe. And I stayed at his home for many years.
He knew most of the people at the Synagogue. Plus he saw the tombs
of ancestors.at the Orange Street Jewish cemetery,
This was a wonderful experience. Thanks to Donald I now
have documentation of my many experiences in Jamaica..

The kind soul

February 8, 2018

Donald was an incredible kind soul who was a giving person who was the strong quiet and firm observer and participant of life. It always amazed me how energetic he was and always the first to lend a hand to help you.

My mother, was Donald’s sister in law but I saw Donald more of a brother to her. He made her a priority in his life after Raymond passed on.

Donald was very organized and ensured the in home nursing care was always covered which was no easy task. This is where he truly was selfless and and we’re for ever thankful for his watchful eye. He made the arrangements for Mummy funeral and inernment at Saint Andrew’s Parish Church where Raymond, Donald, and Alison Are together.

Donald worked tirelessly with Merrill Needham and then Prime Minister Bruce Golding to officially honour Mapletoft Poulle and Alison Poulle Lindo to recognize both as cocompser and co author of the Jamaica National Anthem.

Donald always had  proper dinner when I stayed with him and was fearless driving me from here to there, wherever we needed to go.

The dinners were always a great surprise, whether it was curry goat and rice and peas with sour dip juice. He linked me back to my boyhood days growing up in Jamaica and had me asking “Why  do I live in Delaware again?”
