Dorothy Ann Libby Obituary

Mesa, AZ — Dorothy A. Libby, age 94, died peacefully on July 30, 2016 at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ, while recovering from injuries related to a fall.  She was predeceased by her loving husband of 46 years, Norbert Libby, who passed away on March 25,1992. 

Dorothy is survived by four children: Glenn Libby of Big Rapids, MI, Dave Libby of Traverse City, MI, Pat Ley (Dan) of Cheyenne, WY, and Brian Libby (Linda) of Eastham, MA. She also leaves behind ten grandchildren: Lisa Libby, Anna Lusk, Jon Libby, Jaime Koch, Jenny Clark, Matt Ley, Kim Libby, Kristin Libby, Kevin Libby, and Ken Libby; as well as five great-grandchildren:  Emmilyn Koch, Elsa Murphy, James Murphy, and twins Mikayla and Addison Ley.

She was born July 28, 1922, in Park River, North Dakota, the second child in a hard working farm family of ten children.  Dorothy was a proud veteran of World War II (a WAVE).  Dorothy joined the Navy on January 21, 1943, and served in Washington DC as secretary to the Head of the Pacific Section, Combat Intelligence Division, Headquarters of the Commander-in-Chief, United States Fleet. 

Dorothy met Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Norbert Libby in Washington DC in June 1944, and after both were discharged, married on February 18, 1946.  After completing college with Norb in 1949, she raised four children and taught school for 26 years in Michigan.  She especially enjoyed teaching the business related classes of the day, including shorthand and typing. 

Norb and Dorothy retired to Mesa, Arizona.  Until her recent hospitalization, Dorothy lived happily and independently at her long-term residence in Venture Out, Mesa, AZ.  She loved her friends and family, and enjoyed keeping up with world events and politics.  She was a former active member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Big Rapids, MI, and Hosanna Lutheran Church in Mesa, AZ.
