Her Life

Ms. Dorothy Melton, the daughter of the late George (Sr.) and Annie Gunn Melton, was born March 23, 1928 in Chambers County, AL. She departed this life peacefully on June 4, 2017 at her residence in Lanett, AL.

Dorothy’s greatest love was taking care of her nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, sitting in her rocking chair, and singing. She always welcomed everyone with a warm smile and conversation.

Dorothy was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Strong and Annie Ruth Tibbs; two brothers, Otis Melton and Willie Lewis Melton; two nieces, Sandra Autry and Gwendolyn Stephanie Tibbs; and three nephews, William Darden, Frank Strong, and Bernard Melton.

She leaves to cherish her memories, a loving and devoted sister, who was also her care taker, Ms. Edith Melton, Lanett, AL; her sister, Emma Kate Elie, Lanett, AL; one brother, George (Mary) Melton, Lanett, AL. Nieces: Elizabeth Melton, Sylvia Sands, Felicia Melton, Earnestine Grant, Mary Alice Davidson, Carrie Thomas, Cynthia Madden, Jacqueline (Richard) Brooks, Tracy Murry, Lanett, AL; Theresa (Aaron) Lewis, Aiken, SC; and Denise Tibbs, Seattle, WA. Nephews: Michael Darden, Dennis Melton, Lanett, AL; Steve Melton, Rev. Ronnie (Carol) Melton, Atlanta, GA; George Melton III, LaFayette, AL; Kwesi Tibbs, Samuel Tibbs, Seattle, WA; Kobena (Miriam) Tibbs, Convington, GA; special cousin, Melissa Marie Luck, Atlanta, GA, a host of great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews; cousins; relatives; and friends.
