I met Dr. Umez for the first time during Mboho Ndito Ibibio National Convention here in Houston Texas in June of 2017. I remember noticing Professor Umez as he walked into that convention arena to represent the Nigerian Foundation as the President of that organization at the time, as he got recognized to speak at the event, I couldn't help but noticed his great command of English, his baritone voice, his charisma, and his charming look which I believe was quite noticeable by most people at the event. To sum it all, he had all the right words to say when he gave a short speech before making his donation on behalf of the Nigerian Foundation, (an organization which he graciously represented). In less than no time, I soon realized that Dr. Umez was our very own Annang son-in-law, which drew me even closer to him. From his relationship with my sister, (his widow) Mrs. Emaido Umez, I came to know a true legend, a true gentleman, a great teacher, a great husband, a great father, a dependable friend, a selfless humanitarian whose love for others knew no tribal boundaries. "Oh, death! where is thy sting" Little did I know that I would write a tribute so soon in memory of someone as young and as vibrant as my dearest handsome brother-in-law. Since the news of Dr. Umez's untimely death broke, I have been in denial, it has been so surreal, I have tried to wish it away, i have tried to wake up from this nightmare but soon realized that death is so inevitable and it's one call of nature that, none of has the power to control its cruelty. Dr. Umez, your sudden death, has thought me how fragile life really is, you were a true matriarch and you have left a scar in our hearts which no one can fill. You will forever be missed because if it's not "Prof, it can never be like Prof". Adieu, my handsome brother-in-law "ukot Annang ajid" till we meet to part no more.

DR. BEDFORD UMEZ

I met Professor Bedford Umez for the first time in 2014 or 2015 during the Nigerian Foundation meeting where he was the President. I came to know him as an honest, extremely hardworking and dependable leader. A man of integrity with so much humility and it was an honor to serve as Secretary and later Vice President of the Nigerian Foundation under his able leadership.

Professor Umez over time became a brother and friend. He had a great sense of humor. What can I say about this great man. I cannot question God but to express my gratitude to God for giving this world, Professor Umez. As a Christian, I strongly believe that Dr. Umez was sent to us by God for a purpose and God called His son back to Himself upon completion of that purpose.

My dearest brother, I miss you so much. The pain of your unexpected departure is so palpable. It hurts so much but I know we shall meet again one day to part no more. Continue to rest at the bosom of our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. I LOVE YOU MY BRBUT GOD LOVES YOU MORE.

Dr Umez

I rejoined The Nigerian Foundation after Dr Bedford Umez became the President.   It was purely because of his honesty and determination to get things done the proper way without minding the consequences. I figured that due to the person I knew him to be, if he couldn’t fix the inherent problems inside TNF, no body else would. I was right because not only did he fix the problems by sacrificing his money and image over an ill advised legal issue against him and the Organization, he came away victorious. He restored the image of TNF and today the Organization’s flags are flying high again. I can go on and on singing his praises but because of space and time, I will stop here. I still find it difficult to believe that my friend has gone to heaven but God knows best. Good bye my President and Professor. MAY YOUR SOUL CONTINUE TO REST IN PERFECT PEACE, AMEN.

HC Balo Ngumezi.

You will be missed!

Dr. Umez was one of my favorite professors.  He made Government so fascinating...especially when he reminisced about life in Nigeria. What a legacy!
