Her Life

Edith

April 20, 2014

Born June 5, 1914 in Omaha to Frank and Nora Huffsmith, Edith spent her childhood in Norfolk,Nebraska, the middle sister between Marian and Mildred. At 16 she went to live with a cousin in Omaha to help with child care, where, in 1932, she graduated from Tech High.

The depression years found her back with her family, now in Omaha, where every income, including hers as a waitress, helped through the lean times.

In 1939, where she waited tables at Beaton Drugs, Omaha, she met Les From, a fellow employee.  They married in January 1940. In October Bob was born, followed in February 1942 by Chuck, November 1945 by Dick, and June 1948 by Bill.

During the war years Les worked on the railroad until drafted into the Navy in 1944. Edith followed with two boys in tow from Omaha, to Pensacola and San Francisco, then back to Omaha.

In 1947 they purchased The Star Theater in Callawy, Nebraska.  Edith and Les worked the theater, bookkeeping, projectionist, ticket take, etc. while Edith's parents worked the concession. A a couple of years later they sold the theater and opened From's Variety, a small retail store.
