To Pop

December 20, 2013

There are so many stories, lessons and memories about pop that I don’t know where to begin or which one to tell. Every time I think of a memory with him it was always happy and you could always learn from it. His stories of how he came to this country with only a suit case, a wife and two children is a book in itself. He was a simple person and never really needed much. I never saw him complain about anything unless it was politics or something on the news that he disagreed with. He loved his family and was proud of where he came from and what he had achieved. Nothing was given to him and he achieved more things in life than most people who were born here.   I use to love listening to the stories that Pop would tell about Hungary and how when he got to America and how he relied on his relatives to help him get started.

I remember long car rides to Atlantic City with my grandma,  my brothers and all of my cousins, packed into the car on a hot summer day with no A/C and the windows cracked open only a half inch.  Always the frugal businessman, he would say “Lights left on in a vacant room burns Gods eyes”.  He wasn’t cheap mind you - he was simply trying to teach me not to be wasteful and not to take anything for granted.  When we pitched in at his meat market, we would get $5 each and all the gum we could chew – a generous payday for some rearranged canned goods.  My grandpa was always the strongest man in the room – in strength and in principle.

“Help yourself and God will help you.” - that was a phrase that my grandpa loved to recite.  I think about it now and I believe it guided him through life.  It will certainly guide me through mine.

To : Grandma from her grandchildren

We love you and we are so proud of what you & pop did for us. Your strength and what you did the last few years is un-expressible and I know you would have it any other way. Pop is home and at peace he thanks you for everything and he loves you.    Relax now!! He will always be with you.
