Mike's Life

October 4, 2015

Frank Michael Burgio was born in Rochester, New York on July 18, 1926.  He moved to Los Angeles, California with his parents when he was a teenager.  He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1944 and served three years; in the last two, 'Mike' was stationed at Roswell Air Force Base where he met Lucille Frazier in a downtown movie theater.  After the movie, he walked her to the taxi stand.  Two weeks later, while Lucille and her mother Neita were having dinner at a Mexican restaurant, they were sitting only a few tables away from each other.  Mike walked Lucille and her mother home that night.  Four months later, Mike Burgio married Lucille  in First Baptist Church, informally, in the pastor's study in Roswell.   Lucille had a small son named John Paul (from a previous marriage), Mike later adopted.

They moved to L.A., Calif in 1948.  Mike worked as an airplane mechanic and theater manager when he told Lucille if he was going to make something of his life he needed to get an education.  He took the entrance exams at U.C.L.A. and U.S.C.   He chose U.S.C. and accomplished a rare thing by graduating at U.S.C. in 3 years and 3 months in the field of Engineering.

Shortly after graduation he was chosen out of his group to go on The Mobil Gas Economy Run to Colorado Springs, CO and really enjoyed the experience.  Mike chose Westinghouse Electric Corporation and worked 31 years, retiring in 1986.

In 1961, a son, Steven Michael was born but died of complications 4 days later.  In 1964, Marc Roger was born in Covina, California.  He was a tiny bundle of joy what a blessing this event was for us.

While we were living in Scottsdale and John was attending ASU, he met an married Barbara Jean Allen in December, 1970.  Our grandson Paul was born in June, 1976 and our granddaughter, Laurel Ann in March, 1981.  Paul married Candy Sabrina Hiatt and had a son Luke and and daughter, Jillian.  Laurel married Klint Ericson in May of 2005.

Mike loved Golf, Bowling, and Traveling and excelled in all three; rounding out his leisure time, he also loved movies of all kinds, particularly Classic Westerns.  Back to sports:  on Westinghouse golf outings, Mike met Arnold Palmer and Raymond Floyd and had photos taken.  He won 1st Place at The Sahalee Invitational with his group while living in Seattle and played in golf outings all over the U.S.  In bowling, we won 1st place with his boss, Gordon Rose and wife Judy at Sun Villa Lanes in Bellevue, WA and 1st Place with Wanda and M.T. Irwin at Rossmoor Bowl in Seal Beach, CA.

He also loved animals, his pets throughout the years gave him great joy--from parakeets, to dogs and (in his last years) his Siamese cat, Sasha and Tuxedo Cat, Clarence.

In May, 1982 after spending 8 years  as District Manager of Westinghouse's  L.A. office, and 3 years in Seattle as Senior Sales Rep, he was chosen to receive the President's Circle Award.  They sent us for a weekend at the Stanford Court Hotel in San Francisco and (wined and dined us at a huge party) in the Golden Gate Room at The Bank of America Center.  He loved it all!

He traveled extensively and after he retired; we traveled for six weeks, touring the U.S. and Canada in the Fall of 1988 with Hank and Bette Frazier, his brother and sister-in-law.  He took two cruises:  one to the Caribbean with his wife Lucille and son, Marc and Alaska with his brother John, his wife, Jaye, sister Nina, and her daughter Beverly and husband, Steve.  We spent two weeks in Spain with Hank and Bette.  He was always ready to go.

When Mike retired in Scottsdale, Arizona,  he spent 10 years working as a Golf Ranger for the Tournament Players Club and Marriott Camelback Resort.

He was so proud of the 18 years he spent as President of The Park Scottsdale Homeowner's Association and received an award from Mayor, Mary Manross 'in recognition of valuable contributions to The City of Scottsdale, the Neighborhood Watch and GAIN Programs.'

Mike battled cancer for 22 years but rarely complained.  He also battled dementia for last several years of his life but was still always ready to go places and do things.   Our son, Marc stayed with us through Mike's ordeal.  I can never in a million years thank him enough for all his love and care.  Marc will know and understand.

Mike passed away on September 2nd, 2015 from heart failure.  He will be dearly missed by his wife, Lucille and his sons Marc and John, his wife Barb, their children, Paul and his wife, Candy, great-grandchildren, Luke and Jillian, his granddaughter, Laurel, her husband, Klint, his brother, John and sister Nina, his sister-in-law, Bette, and his nephews and nieces:  Beverly, Steve, Dick & family, Danny, Sheila, Michael, Jennifer and family, Martin, Jeff, Pat, Judy, Kathleen, Jeannie, Bill, Richard, James, and Mark.

Thanks to all the relatives and friends for cards, flowers, gifts and all the love and support.

Special thanks to Laurel, our granddaughter for her week of love and help, and our son, John for the four days of love and cooking and repairing.

                                                        -Lucille Burgio
