Rhoades, Frederick Dale “Fred”, “Freddy”

Frederick Dale Rhoades passed peacefully surrounded by his family and friends on June 24,2020 at his daughter’s home in Peoria, Arizona.

Fred was born August 7, 1939 in Indianapolis, Indiana to William and Mildred Rhoades. He was one of six children.

Fred was best known for his humor, passion, and his willingness to always help others. He was a devoted family man, loyal friend, and genuinely interested in everyone he encountered. Fred was also a sociable man who exuded confidence and was not afraid to share his thoughts and opinions no matter what the reaction. He is truly loved and remembered by all!

Fred was a graduate of Elgin High School in 1958 as an elite football player where he was 1st Team All-Big 8 conference selection his senior year. Upon graduation, Fred was highly sought after by over twenty-five university football programs, and he decided on Arizona State University to play center and linebacker for coach Frank Kush. During his career at ASU he was a member of the Freshman All-America Team in 1958, All-conference (Border Conference) 1st Team in 1960 and 1961, and ASU co-captain in 1961. He also received national honors by making the Stanley Woodward’s All- Sectional Team for the southwest as center. He graduated with a BS in Business Administration from Arizona State University in 1963.

During his time at Arizona State University, he met his wife of 56 years, “the love of his life”, Shireen Brewster Alford. They married in 1964 in Tempe, Arizona, and had three children.

Following college, Fred was drafted by the NFL Buffalo Bills as a free agent but declined the opportunity to serve in the US Army Reserve. While enlisted in the reserves, Fred began a long career in sales starting with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Flagstaff, Arizona, and then for National Gypsum Company in El Paso, Texas, as well as Tucson, Arizona. He then moved back to Tempe, Arizona and specialized in the secure check, plastic card, and commercial/financial print industry for Rocky Mountain Bank Note (10 years) before becoming a partner with I.C. Security Printers (25 years). Fred retired at the age of 70 in 2009. He was a successful and dedicated salesman who worked hard but always added joy, laughter, jokes, and puns throughout his daily routine.

Fred Rhoades was Inducted into the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 for his high school class of 1958. His entire family (grandchildren and all!) traveled to Elgin Illinois to be present and were honored to share in this special tribute to him.

Fred was always considered the life of the party and loved engaging in all gatherings. He enjoyed listening to music and dancing, and some of his favorites were BB King and artists from the Big Band Era. Fred was a true competitive sportsman, he loved spending his retired years on the golf course and always remained actively embedded in the ASU Sun Devil legacy programs and football games. He also enjoyed singing in the church choir and serving others through various charities within the church. Fred created very special relationships with all of his grandchildren and never missed a sports event, music event or any other type of activity they were involved in.

Fred is survived and honored by his wife-Shireen; son, Tyler (Diana) Rhoades; daughters, Courtney (Warren) Johnson and Rebecca (Dave) Rhoades/Ryszkowski; grandchildren, Catherine Rhoades, Sydney, Ben and Hannah Johnson, Makenna Millar and Ava Ryszkowski; brother, William (Pat) Rhoades; sister, Margaret "Peg" Ray Glink/Einsel; sister, Kathy (Jim) Jensen; brother, John (Karen) Gardner; Sister Janean Gardner.Fred was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Clarence Gardner and mother, Mildred “Millie” Gardener.

Fred loved ASU, and specifically, the ASU Football Program as it helped shape him as a young man in the late 50's and early 60's. Fred was active in the ASU program for 63 years, and loved everything about the program. With the help of ASU, we have set up the Fred Rhoades Memorial Fund to help support the Football Program. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Fred Rhoades Fund with all proceeds from donations set specifically to help the Football Program's pursuit of excellence. I remember Fred's very first golf round in early spring of 1962. He borrowed clubs from me on a Saturday and was off to Papago Golf Course to meet some friends. Later that afternoon he returned and I asked him how it went. He said it was OK but was a little disappointed in his score, only in the mid 90's. I remember thinking to myself that I had been playing golf for 3 or 4 years and was elated every time I could break 100! He was truly a natural athlete. We enjoyed many years of friendship since ASU. He was a dear friend.

Like everyone who met him, I too adored Fred. I met Fred and Shireen just a couple of years ago when I started attending their church. He was incredibly kind to my daughters and myself and made me feel like we were old friends right away. I really missed seeing them after their move to the east valley, and loved it when they would occasionally come back to their Scottsdale church for a visit. Whenever we chatted Fred told me stories about his grandkids and it was obvious how very proud he was of his family. May your many wonderful memories bring you peace. Fred was a bright light, I will miss him.

I'm just heartbroken. Loved Fred so much. He always had a smile, a kind word and funny story to share. He was my favorite dance partner. He and Shireen always were so kind to me, fussed over me and worried about me all the time. Showed up with chicken soup and Kleenex when I was sick, were the first to visit me in the hospital and kept me busy and checked on me constantly after Mike passed. They were always so much fun to be with. Fred was someone I always looked up to for so many reasons. I could go on and on. Loved him with all my heart and will miss him always. Sending love and condolences to Shireen and their family.

Fred and I were classmates at ASU, friends for 60 years and he was a client, too.

We went to a lot of Christian functions together with his good friend Steve Fedorchak.

We golfed, had a couple of beers and really enjoyed life.

Fred will be missed. Great guy!! FastEddie Sandidge

My heart is broken. Fred and Shireen have always been "my heroes" as a couple! I just adored both of them. Fred was the cutest man on the planet. I used to work with Shireen (my husband and I called her, Shireeney-weeny), and the first time I met Fred was in the "copy room". He came in to pick up Shireen for work, and proceeded to dance with her, cheek to cheek, in the copy room! Shireen was always "shooshing" him off, but I know that she LOVED his playfulness! I remember an anniversary celebration in their beautiful back yard in Mesa....with so many life long friend who also adored them! We've had the amazing privilege of sharing a few very special evenings with them as their guests for dinner. They were always the "hosts with the most"! I hope Shireen is doing as okay as can be expected. Please, please give her my love. I am so sorry to hear of this very sad news. The world will never be quite as bright without Fred's sparkly spirit. What amazing examples they were of what is possible when two people who were meant for each other, fall in love, and share their gifts as a couple, with those who are fortunate enough to call them friends!

I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to Shireen and her family. I have been receiving emails recently about the passing of Sundevil team mates but Fred's hit me the hardest. After graduation I went back to Pennsylvania and have seen Fred only one time in all those years and it was certainly a joyuos occasion. Not only was Fred valuable team mate, he was my fraternity brother, and a very good friend. He will be missed and may God help us get over his loss!

I always enjoyed our conversations about sports - specifically how much better the PAC 12 was than the Big 10 - Big 10 is too slow he said! Freddie always had the slickest new golf club that will change your game. He was a good friend and a great father figure. I will miss him

Fred and Shireen were our neighbors when we married one month after them. Sherry was a bridesmaid in their wedding. In the early days we spent many evenings together dining on our patio or their patio apartment. In the later years we often dined at their home in Fountain Hills. we remained close friends for more than 50 years. I played golf with Fred on many outings. He would always win with his "booming" drives. Fred was always a devoted sun devil. Tim / Sherry Bray

Fred we were friends for over 60 years. We spent many good years on the football field together, but we also had many good times with our families.
It looks like Frank is getting the team together one by one up in his new stadium in the sky. Be sure to save me a good seat in his heavenly stadium. Remember to make those seats big enough so we can fit in them.
Enjoyed our last trip out together memorializing Coach Tamburo , even though our lunch wasn't that hot. Because of covid-19 we weren't able to spend more time together, but I cherish the times we did get to go to breakfast. I know you won't miss those tacky lunches at the raceway, so I hope lunches will be better up there. Love to good times.  Steve Fedorchak (Marge too)

Fred was a great friend and grandfather. We had the privilege of sharing three wonderful grandchildren whom we both loved dearly. Since our backgrounds and experiences were different, we both had much to share with them. I looked forward to spending some time with Fred because he was always glad to see me and one of the best conversationalists I have ever meet. We talked about how lucky we were that Courtney and Warren fit in so well with our families and each other. Fred will be greatly missed by all of us.
Sincerely, Paul Johnson

As many of you remember and cherish, here are a few of Fred's many sayings or Puns: (Please add your memories to the list)

“Melon Collie”, head like a melon face like a Collie!

Tugging on his hair as if he wore a toupee and putting it back in place.

Moving his neck only to the left, then the right, then in a full circle around.

“Amen…………Hallelujah Brother!"

“ Soouuuiiiiiii!” – yelling at the top of his lungs.

“Hit me easy, I am full of pie!” – when paying the cashiers or bill at a restaurant.

“I am so hungry, my throat thinks my stomach is cut”

“City Morgue, you stab ‘em we slab ‘em! - Answering the phone.

Bird calls with the leaf on his tongue that sound so real, surrounding people are looking all around for this incredible species!

The Farley Family was lucky to know Fred. Being friends with his daughter Courtney, son-in-law Warren and Fred's grandchildren, it is clear how close knit this family is. The joy of walking into many a Johnson gathering and seeing Fred brought smiles to our faces, especially his greeting to our son with a loud "Jack, my man!". His jovial laughter and quick wit made the occasions all the more joyous. He never missed an opportunity to take a moment to say hello, check in with us, and to share a story. Weekly football games and powerful chats to cheer on the boys, along with fun jokes with the girls on the sidelines were a welcome addition. Well dressed, well spoken, resolute, fun, and fair, Fred was a pleasure to know and will be missed.

Coach

July 9, 2020
Fred's grandson --Ben Johnson was one of our leaders on a football team that played together for five years; our team was good.

Fred would visit our practices and watch; soon, his football passion and knowledge were employed; he would take on the role of giving the pre-game speech; his speeches were inspiring, somewhere between  Knute Rockne and Tony Robbins.

He always called me coach; I considered that a huge compliment from a man I admired and respected.

I will miss you Fred.
