Fred Gabos, 87, went to be with the Lord on August 27, 2020. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, graduated from East New York Technical School, and earned a degree in electrical engineering from the City University of New York. Fred went on to work for the General Electric Company in Schenectady, NY in 1954 as a design engineer in the Large Motor & Generator Department. He eventually transitioned to sales and marketing where he spent the rest of his 36-year career.

It was at GE that he met Joan E. Carlow, whom he married in 1961. The couple raised their family on Ridge Road and were devoted parishioners of Saint Joseph Church in Scotia, NY. They moved to Robinson Road in Glenville before retiring in Summerfield, FL in 2008, where they joined St. Timothy Church. When not gardening, Fred was a self-taught student of the stock market, passionately tracking stock prices over the years.

Fred will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Joan; son Douglas Gabos (Rebecca); daughters, Deborah Gatta (John), Christine Mauriello (Thomas) and Linnette Bush; and nine grandchildren, David and Evelyn Gabos, Tyler and Teegan Gatta, Melissa, Keith and Macey Mauriello, and Kelsey and Colby Bush. Additionally, he is survived by his brother Mario Gabos (Maryse) and sisters Dolores Giugliano (Julie), Eleanor Monell (Bob) and Louise Fries (Stuart) and was predeceased by his parents Carmella and Silvio Gabos.

Dad wasn't the kind of person you tell colorful stories about. He never drew attention to himself. He was modest, self-deprecating, rarely judgmental, and never prone to excess. He would often say, quoting his Mother, "everything in moderation."

Dad had a fantastic sense of humor. He loved to laugh at a good joke, particularly off-color jokes and he also liked to laugh at himself. He never took himself too seriously. He remained a student of philosophy his entire life. He was fascinated by the human condition, by what motivated and inspired people. He put that knowledge to good use when it came to understanding the stock market. I never saw his pulse raise when it came to investing. “You have to take emotion out of the equation,” he would tell me. Nobody did that better than him....and it remains great advice, even now.

Dad lived a life that would make anybody proud and maybe even a bit envious. He remained a devoted believer, was married to the same loving wife for almost 60 years, raised four children and nine grandchildren, and had the opportunity in his later years to travel the world with his wife and his children and grandchildren.

Dad never strayed from his old world convictions and conservative beliefs. He loved this country and what it promised. He believed that self-reliance, hard work and dedication would bring you success. He instilled those beliefs in all his children.

If there is anyone I’d like to be more like in this world—it’s Dad. God bless you. I will love you forever.

Fred Gabos was a second Dad to me where I grew up on Ridge Rd. He saw who I was and what I was doing. He was my first art patron. He commissioned me to create a painting for their living room. Only other artists and freelancers understand the importance of this. Without his interest in me, I would be a much lesser man. Fred Gabos is a great part of my success. Bless him and the beautiful family he raised and protected. I send a prayer to all the Gabos and give them peace and acceptance. Most of all to Joan Gabos who fed me countless times and taught me manners and what a graceful and proper mom was. Some people are real angels.

Words cannot express the sadness i felt at the loss of my “kid” brother Fred. There were many times when I sought his advice and he never failed to come through. Fred was one of a kind — a man of high moral standards, deeply religious and who adored his family. He had a great sense of humor. I was lucky enough to speak to him on the phone the day before he passed — thanks to my sister Eleanor. I shared many memories with him during the conversation. Eleanor said he understood and smiled at each recollection. There is no doubt in my mind that he was welcomed in heaven by our parents. May he rest in peace. I will always miss him.

My uncle Fred was one "Very Cool Guy"! He used to love teaching me about asset allocation and diversification. I was not allowed to talk, just listen and learn. Now I can imagine our lord having great conversations with him. He will have to adjust to do most of the listening. Our loss is heavens gain.

We were saddened to learn of the loss of such a special member of the Robinson Road family. Thank you for posting the beautiful story of his life with accompanying pictures. What an endearing story of how Joan and Fred met, and what a great wedding picture. Theirs was a true love story, and so many of us admired the value they placed on family and learned from the kindness that together they shared with all. We send our sympathy to all of Fred's family who were the beneficiaries of all that love and devotion.

What a beautiful, heartfelt tribute. I truly enjoyed reading this and looking through in the amazing photos. Thank you for sharing all of those!!!

The world lost one of the good guys! Uncle Freddie was a kind soul.  He always had a smile on his face and always had a lot to share.  If you were willing to listen you could learn a lot from him.

At our family reunions Uncle Freddie was genuinely happy to see each and every person. He had a way of asking very informed and direct questions that made you know he remembered your conversations from years past and wanted to learn more about you and how you were doing.

You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that through all your beautiful memories you can keep him alive in your hearts.

Love you all,
Laura

Mr. Gabos (& Mrs.) became my very welcoming neighbor in 1989. Always sharing a warm greeting, holiday wish, & willing to share helpful advice. Fred & Joan were the first to celebrate the births of both of my daughters, treating them as their own grandchildren. I enjoyed acting as their family travel agent, as Fred was always planning their next adventure! I admired his never ending quest for knowledge, & self improvement. Fred always kept himself in tiptop shape, & was a shining example of a retiree enjoying life! His love for Joan & their family glowed! Fred suffered along with the rest of us, never complaining. We could all borrow a page from his contributions to humanity. You will be missed!

His Life

FRED GABOS - A RICH LIFE STORY

September 4, 2020
Fred was born Ferdinando Gabos on December 31, 1932. He was a sweet and spirited child, though not the "spirit" most valued by the nuns at Saint Ambrose Elementary School. His parents valued education and demanded that he take his schooling seriously. On one occasion when his mother was called in to school to discuss his grades, which were 50% across all subjects, she said, "What is this? Nobody can be that bad in EVERY subject.  He has to be good at something!"  This was Freddie's saving grace.  His mother always believed in him.  As did his older brother Mario, to whom he looked up to and admired, in spite of always being in his shadow.

Freddie was a good brother to his sisters, as well, even though he did spend a fair amount of energy tormenting his sister Eleanor.  ;)

In his spare time he loved to take things apart to figure out how they worked.  He would do this with whatever he could get his hands on (radios, valves, locks, etc.).  An obvious precursor to his career path.

Freddie transitioned from his Catholic primary school to East New York Technical High School in ninth grade, where he majored in electricity.  He found the course work there to be much more suited to his interests and did well in high school.  He was even voted "Most Popular" in his graduating class.

Fred went on to attend City University of NY and earned an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. That was all he needed to land his first (and last) job at the General Electric Company as a Design Engineer in the Large Motor and Generator Department in Schenectady, NY.  Eventually Fred transitioned to Sales and Marketing, where he spent the rest of his career.

Fred was a hard worker and very successful in his career at GE, but he found his passion was really in the stock market.  He was a prolific reader of business journals and spent many weekends doing research at home or the local library.  His ability to analyze and successfully navigate the tricky and volatile markets was truly his forte.  He would share his knowledge with anyone who asked.  They just needed to have a lot of time set aside to listen to the answer.

GE had more to offer than just a job.  It also had a sweet sounding phone operator who caught his ear.  That Long Distance Switchboard Operator was Joan E. Carlow.  After dating about a year they were married on June 10, 1961.

The couple purchased their first home at 352 Ridge Road and their family followed shortly thereafter. In 1962 Fred and Joan were blessed with twins, F. Douglas and Deborah, followed by Christine Marie in 1964 and Linnette Louise in 1968, to whom they passed along their shared values in God, family, heritage and education.

Fred and Joan had a strong reverence for God and belief in the Catholic religion. They were always present for their children, from nurturing their creativity to supporting their individual interests and building their self-esteem.  Both instilled a love of the outdoors and infused fun with family togetherness.

Fred and Joan always instilled the importance of family, from their immediate family to the extended relatives. There were summer visits and vacations with cousins as well as the annual trips to New York City every Thanksgiving and Easter to visit grandparents, aunts/uncles and cousins.  Fred had significant pride in his Italian heritage.  He loved passing along stories of his family history and conversing in Italian with his parents during those visits.

Finally, Fred and Joan both emphasized the values of responsibility, hard work and a good education.  Although fun loving, Fred expected the best effort from his children... and it paid off.  All of their children went to college, with Doug and Deb earning Masters degrees.  Doug had a decorated career in the Navy, Deb and Linn followed in their father's footsteps with careers in Sales/Marketing and Chrissie found her passion as an advocate for children with special needs.

Fred and Joan moved to Robinson Road in 1982 and then to Summerfield, FL in 2008.  They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2011.  They have nine grandchildren: David, Melissa, Tyler, Teegan, Keith, Macey, Kelsey, Colby and Evelyn.

He was truly the most brilliant man I knew

September 17, 2020

One of my earliest memories of Grampy is the day he taught me how to count by 2s. I couldn't have been much older than 5 or 6 at the time. I remember being amazed at how he could've thought of something so brilliant. Going 2, 4, 6, 8 was something I had never even thought of. But he wasn't done amazing me yet. Then he told me about how I could count by 3s too. I was stunned. How could I be related to such a smart man? Although now I realize he was brilliant in so many more ways than counting by 2s, this will be a memory I hold dear to me for the rest of my life. Counting by 2s and 3s has become something that makes me think of him every time. Whether it's counting inventory at my first full time job or simply counting how many worms to feed my gecko, Grampy is with me always.
