How can I possibly put into words the larger than life man that I had the privilege to call my Grandfather? Granddad touched everyone he met with his warm smile, a firm handshake, his love for life, a good story, and an amazing sense of humor. He lived his life with honor, integrity, and was the true definition of a gentleman. Granddad was there for everything; he put me through college, he gave me great pep talks when I battled cancer, and most importantly he loved me unconditionally. I will forever be grateful for all that he gave me and pray that I will continue to make him proud. I have so many wonderful memories and I would like to share just a few with you.

Granddad did not live by a watch or a calendar. He came and went whenever the feeling hit him. This normally involved a trip to the local McDonalds or a nice hike in the mountains. Although I am proud to say that when it came time for Hannah’s yearly dance recitals it forced him to go by a schedule. He never missed a recital and was there year after year cheering on his Great Granddaughter.

There are so many funny stories that I could tell. However, I could not speak about Granddad without mentioning his love for sweets. A very strong gene that he so graciously passed down to all his granddaughters. Now you would think there’s not much to this tale but think again, he had rules to follow. Rule number one “dessert before dinner is always a good idea”. Rule number two “if you make me a plate of goodies, to take with me, then sharing is optional” (this of course resulted in me making Uncle Fred his own plate of goodies). Then of course he was always up for a Ho Ho eating contest. Yes, he would actually sit at the table with Hannah, a sharp knife, and two Ho Ho’s that he so precisely cute into small and even slices. The object of the game was to see who could take the longest to eat their dessert. Of course he always let Hannah win but he still got his lesson across to her…patience! Then there are the home made lemon meringue pies that I would make Granddad every year for his birthday. His famous response year after year was always the same “this is pretty good but I think you better keep practicing dear”.

Granddad was my rock, my mentor, my hero, my inspiration, my very best friend, and I will deeply miss him. I will carry his love in my heart and hear his words of wisdom daily. Granddad and I talked many times during the week and he refused to say ‘goodbye’ when we hung up the phone or even after we would visit. So Granddad, as you would always say, this is not goodbye, but I’ll see you later.
