I am a first cousin to Jerry. His mother being my dad's (Ralph Burris) sister. We never really knew each other, I being born in 1936 and him in 1937, due his mothers early death. I see his name in my family history and pulled up this information. He had a wonderful life and I am so glad to call him cousin. Most of the cousin that I know are gone now leaving two from the Burns family, two from the Martins and my sister and I from the Burris family. If you want family history let me know. Mona Burris Kubler

Todd and I met Jerry at West Cypress Church when our church came over to merge with his. He and Lucy were both very special to us. Jerry's warm smile and kind words greeted us every Sunday faithfully for many years as we entered and exited church on Sunday mornings. His dedication to Prison ministry and service to our country were both things we admired about him. I used to love passing him and Lucy when I would be out and about during their days as crossing guards they would give the biggest smiles and waves. I like to picture Lucy waiting with Jesus at the Pearly gates to cross Jerry into Heaven like she crossed the kids all those years.

I still recall the first time that Jerry came to Cypress Park Community Church. He told us all that he had recently found Christ as his Lord and Savior and had been looking for a church home. He faithfully served and attended that church for the rest of his life. Jerry also had a burden for those who needed Jesus as their Savior and reached out and served in so many ways to that end.
Jerry was very open to God's leading. He ministered to Burt and I personally when our son, Greg had suffered a massive stroke and was close to passing from this life. His kindness and caring will always be remembered. You were a good friend and we miss you already...

Such an absolutely amazing brother in Christ! Mona and I feel blessed to have gotten to know Jerry over the past years. Although we only knew of each other in passing the first year or so, Jerry made it very easy and welcoming to get to know him. He was as deep as he was transparent, and we knew very early that we loved Jerry. Of course, being from Kansas, he connected with my wife and my in-laws almost immediately. Always making time to talk Kansas anything. :-) Me? I really enjoyed hearing about his prison runs and just shooting' the breeze.
In looking back on my journey thus far, Jerry is one of the great ones that God put in my path. Now that he has gone home, I have started to better understand how big his role has been. Like many of us, I know that I am further in my walk than I was yesterday, but not nearly where I hope to be tomorrow. I feel like Jerry knew it too, but he made it his mission to be relentless in his pursuit of the lost and his faith made him fearless. There was no place he wouldn't go or a person he wouldn't speak with. He was truly a fisher of men and for all my days, his memory will serve as a reminder of what we are all called to be, and to do. I will forever remember Jerry as being a loyal servant to God, a man who treated everyone like brothers and sisters in Christ. Regardless of their station, Jerry knew that all of the lost were just once removed. One prison run, one breakfast, one prayer, or one "Hello" from making the introduction to Christ Jesus.
He fished for the lost every day and I believe in my heart that he has pleased the Lord. He will be truly missed and always remembered.

If your lucky there may be two or three really special friends in your lifetime. I am proud to say that Jerry Bayless was one of those rare finds. We plowed through many things together. Some disagreements, but were minor incidence in our long time relationship. Jerry got me involved with many things that without his influence I would have never known about. One thing we never disagreed on was our faith in God. "you got there first Jerry, looking forward to a beautiful new relationship".

Jerry was an amazing blessing to so many. His commitment to prison ministry and his passion for the lost was evidence of his love for Jesus. No matter how a conversation was started, Jerry would always bring it around to Jesus. While I know he enjoyed walking his dog around the neighborhood, he used it as an opportunity to talk to people he would come across about Jesus and Jerry never shied away from asking them if they knew Jesus as their personal Savior. Jerry was a shining example as to what it means to live for Christ. He is missed. Prayers for the family.

Our Dad's story

August 14, 2020
Our dad, Gerald Luther Bayless (Jerry), 83, of Westminster, CA, passed away on July 10, 2020 after a difficult battle with COVID-19.
He was born on January 15, 1937 to Luther and Amanda Bayless in Pittsburg, KS. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1954. During his time in the Navy, some of the ships he worked on were the USS Forrest Sherman DD-931 and USS Gainard DD-706, along with different bases on the east and west coast.  He retired from the Navy in February 1973 with an honorable discharge.
In 1956, Dad met the love of his life,  Lucille Ogle (Lucy), during a night of roller skating that took a twist and changed his life forever! They were married for 58 wonderful years. Dad was determined to provide for his family by giving us the life he felt we deserved. While in the Navy  he worked days, he was home for a couple hours and would return to base, working nights at the NCO club. He worked hard to ensure that Mom could always be home to raise us five kids.
After 20 years in the U.S. Navy, he worked at the Thrifty Store warehouse where he retired after  20 years . In  retirement, he choose  to become a crossing guard after seeing how much Mom enjoyed doing it.  He earned the prestigious honor of Crossing Guard for the years of 2000-2001 and 2014-2015. The kids loved him and he loved the kids!
Dad became a Christian in 1979 and never wavered in his beliefs. He was very involved in the West Cypress Church, where he led Bible study classes, volunteered with VBS and was one of the beloved greeters every Sunday morning. He always shared his love of Jesus and encouraged many people in their faith.
Dad was involved in many organizations, volunteering countless hours, and met many wonderful people along the way.  An important member of the Christian Motorcycle Association, he helped start several local chapters in California. He was the top fund raiser in Calvary Riders each year and several years ago CMA Southern California sent him on a Missionary Ventures trip to deliver motorcycles and Bibles to the pastors in  Nicaragua. CMA's “Run For the Son” started as an effort to provide just one motorcycle  to a pastor in Guatemala and now provides over 14,000 of them all over the world.
Dad also rode to multiple prisons in  California and Arizona, sharing the Gospel with  inmates through “Bill Glass Prison Ministries.”
Thanksgiving Day, you would find Dad at the Honda Center parking lot for “We Give Thanks”, cooking up vegetables as dinner was served to several thousand people every year.
A volunteer coordinator for “BAD RIDES”, Bikers Against Diabetes,  he had up to 300 volunteers he was in charge of organizing at each event. He raised funds for “Relay for Life”, an organization that helps those with cancer, following the loss of  his granddaughter Danere, to breast cancer in 2010.
As  President for Branch 175 of the Fleet Reserves he was awarded "Sailor of the Year" in 2018-2019. He organized the “American Patriotism in Young People” essay contest for 7-12th graders in his area, he read  the entries for the scholarship winners, which would then be sent to the National Headquarters. He was very proud  that they had a National Winner from their chapter more than once.   He was  very proud to be a  “Patriot Guard,” on motorcycles they honored our fallen soldiers by  escorting them  from the airport, as they were brought home.
When the Navy ship, the Battleship IOWA, was decommissioned for the final time in 2012 at San Pedro, Dad became a docent. He wanted to do something new during retirement!  He spent hours studying the history of the ship so that he could be a fully informed docent to all the patrons that joined his tours. He volunteered over 500 hours in the 8 years there,  giving tours to hundreds of individuals, groups and elementary school classes. The time spent volunteering helped him become the recipient of a very sought-after jacket  few volunteers have earned. We were so proud of him, Dad even has his name on one of the bunks within the ship!
Dad loved to go deep sea fishing. He was always so excited to bring back his catch so Mom could make fish tacos! As passionate craftsman, He could be found in his garage workshop or  office making gifts for family and friends, usually something adorable to go in the garden or front yard. He made beautiful leather craft items  for many years and  he enjoyed giving  demonstrations at the OC Fair.  Also, Dad's  lighthouses--his collection is something to see! There is even a huge one in his garden that he made for the OC fair!
A huge fan of the Los Angeles Angels Baseball team, He had season tickets and many game souvenirs. He has quite the collection of bobble heads, shirts, jackets and, of course, the rally monkeys!  If he couldn't be at a game, he'd try to watch it on the sports channel.
Those who knew our dad would often see him on one of his motorcycles, his bicycle or walking his dog, Tucker, through the neighborhood. Dad said hello to everyone he saw.  He knew most of his neighbors by name, the names of their children and grandchildren.  He would inquire about them and what was happening in their lives. He also knew many from crossing their kids from school.  Dad made the community of Indian Village, the neighborhood where he lived, his "Village".  He never slowed down.
Dad made sure that his best buddy for the last 5 years, Tucker, would be taken care of and now is in good hands with Michele.
He is survived by his children Daniel (Kim), Denise (Jody), Michele, Susan (Dale) and Bill (Lorraine), 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Dad was preceded in death by our mom, Lucy, in January 2015. They are now together again. We love you mom and dad!
Our family would like to thank everyone for their love, prayers and support during this difficult time, we wish we could be together. But for now through  words, videos or pictures we can celebrate Dad's life here.  Special Thanks to Pastor Brian for coming to the hospital. As only family was allowed  in his room,  by using their  phones, he  prayed with Michele and Dad at his bedside.
Dad believed in volunteering and  giving to charities, so in lieu of flowers, our family requests that  donations be made to any of the following:

A Wise Man

August 27, 2020
Our lives were enriched by knowing Jerry. He lived his life loving people of all ages, but especially loving his Savior. He was God’s servant is so many ways from creating a magical place for children to experience Vacation Bible School, to serving people in Baja during the Medical Mission trips, to making sure everyone was offered a warm handshake at the end of every Sunday morning service, to serving food at our Church’s Women Christmas Bunch, to playing the part of one of the Wise Men at our Church’s Christmas Programs. His laugher and smile will always be remembered. Both he and his wife Lucy were always ready for a fun time even swinging a hula hoop at a Christmas Nifty Fifty New Year’s Eve Party. He is gone to soon, but this wise and kind man lives in our hearts and is enjoying seeing his wonderful Lucy.

That wonderful smile

August 20, 2020
I met Jerry when my family began attending West Cypress Church 11 years ago. As others have mentioned he was such a kind man! Some of the things that he did that showed his generous heart was when he took a group of fathers and their sons to the USS Iowa. My son had a wonderful time exploring that ship that Jerry took such great pride in. Another time I enjoy remembering was family camp a few years ago. Jerry brought his dog up for the day and he let my boys play with his dog. He found so much joy in seeing children enjoy life. He even helped out at VBS. What a special man Jerry is and we miss him so!

True Servant’s Heart

August 17, 2020
I’ve known Jerry for about 18 years. My husband Glen and I met him when we joined CMA in 2002 but I really came to know him in 2006 when I attended my first Bill Glass Behind the Walls Prison ministry weekend in San Bernardino.  I had the privilege of serving alongside him at these events for many years afterwards.  The moment I met Jerry I felt like I had known him all my life.  He made me feel so welcome in CMA and the Prison ministry.  Jerry loved the Bill Glass Prison ministry.  At the end of a day on the prison yard, he would share with Glen and I, many times with tears in his eyes, about the experience he had that day and the connections that God allowed him to make.

Jerry was always humble about sharing his encounters (divine appointments)…always giving glory to God.  He never bragged or boasted about anything…he simply shared how God used him to lead someone into a saving knowledge of Christ or how he was able to speak to someone about something God had sent him as a messenger to say to an inmate.

Jerry was one of the most humble, kind, and selfless servants of Christ that I’ve ever known.  He oozed Christ wherever he went.

Jerry had a great sense of humor.  He always took his walk with Christ seriously but took himself and life’s experiences with a lighthearted attitude.  He often emailed me blonde jokes.  I loved that he thought of me and wanted to make me laugh.

In Feb. 2014 after Glen was diagnosed with Brain cancer, Jerry would email or call us regularly to let us know he was praying for us and to remind us that we were in the palm of God’s hands.  He purchased a luminary bag in Glen’s honor and walked for him in the fund raising event to support the American Cancer Society.

In Jan 2015 Jerry’s beloved wife and ministry partner Lucy fell and had complications from surgery and passed away.  Jerry was surrounded by lots of love and support from his CMA Brothers and Sisters at Lucy’s service in Cypress.  The showing at the service reflected the many years that Jerry and Lucy had sown into the lives of those God put in their paths.

Even during this time of grief at the missing of Lucy, Jerry continued to reach out to anyone who God put on his heart to minister to including myself.  Glen and I were the recipients of Jerry’s compassionate heart and Jerry remained in contact with us during Glen’s cancer journey.

After Glen was called home to Heaven, Jerry still followed up with me often and continued to send those blonde jokes to make me laugh.

I sure will miss seeing Jerry at our CMA events and the Bill Glass weekends, he was one of the people that I was most glad to see and visit with and of course…I was always so happy to get a big hug.  He always made me feel so good just to be in his presence.  He radiated with Christ’s love and everyone felt that.

We will all see Jerry again and our loved ones who have preceded us in Christ.  He is in glory with his Lord and Savior….he has run the race that God set before him and he ran it well!
