Hal, one of the richest memories of my childhood was the day you invited me to your home on the Webb Road where you had a room in the upstairs that had rail road tracks and trains. I had such a good time playing with the trains that day that it stands out as one of my richest and delightful childhood memories. You always had such an acceptance about you that you attracted friends.
I recall while we were in High School and playing football, the coach put me in and on the first play two players on the offensive line blocked me to the ground. I lay there being run over. You came over to me offered a hand to get up and said. “Godfrey, try to stay on your feet.” The next play, I was quicker than they and I did just that. I stayed on my feet went in the back field chasing after the quarter back. You gave me a thumbs up.
My calling and life has taken me far away from my childhood home of West Point but that night you gave me something to hold on to. “Try to say on your feet.” Those words of your have echoes in my mind and heart when life and situations have knocked me down and with the help of God I have, “Stayed on my feet.”
Sometimes we never know what we say that will forever affect someone’s life.
Being a Clergy in the United Methodist Church I have officiated at a multitude of celebrations of people’s life. My faith has taught me not to say “Good-buy” to them. I simply say, “See you later.”
Hal, you have now ventured into God’s Eternal Kingdom where you are safe and well. Thanks for touching my life and I simply say to you, my friend, “See You Later.”
