Gardening
One of Grandpa's favorite hobbies was gardening. He grew a very nice garden in my Uncle's backyard with beautiful plants and delicious fruits. Grandpa enjoyed explaining to us the different types of fruits and plants that he grew. I really enjoyed hearing Grandpa tell us about his garden, because you could see the joy in his eyes and hear it in his voice too, his love for gardening. I loved to eat the delicious grapefruits from the tall grapefruit tree that he grew, and I enjoyed looking at the beautiful plants.
Go Game Guru
My father has a remarkable talent for the centuries-old game known as Go. (Chinese: 圍棋 wéiqí).
He was so devoted to playing the Go Games that he would skip meals to complete the games, and sometimes I had to go to other faculty members homes to find my father and asked him to go home for dinners.
When he had business trips to Taipei, he loved to go to the Go Game Club by New Park (台北台湾新公园) to play or watch other professionals play Go games.
Because he was so good at playing Go games, he won most of the times. As a result, he had to play the Go Game by himself.
The man who fought phase 4 lung cancer.
The median stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer life expectancy (the time at which 50% of patients are alive and 50% have passed away) is only around 8 months. When my father was diagnosed with phase 4 lung cancer by a doctor, who showed 4 fingers (meaning 4 months) to me.
Despite doctor's diagnosis, my father's battle with phase 4 lung cancer lasted one year and 5 months. It is indeed a miracle. I think the reasons why my father survived much longer than average phase 4 lung cancer patinets are 1. his strong desire to live 2. family support and care 3. non-orthodox lung cancer medicine treatments.
My father knew the importance of family support, and asked me to visit him in Los Angeles from Chicago. I visited him 5 times in 2012, and 2 times in 2013.
My father passed away one day after I left Arcadia on my second visit in 2013. I am so grateful to my father and to god that my father waited for my visit.
Jump Into pond to save his son
One evening after dinner my father took me and my little brother (approximately 4 years old) to take a walk. We went to s small pond watching people catching fish. My little brother fell into pond suddenly, and flowed into an underground ditch. My father jumped into the pond immediately without any hesitation, stretching his arms to pull my brother from the underground ditch.
Thanks to my father's quick decision and action, he saved my little brother's life.
