Growing up in Guyana_Ghost Story from Uncle Forook

June 29, 2021
Our times together were full of laughs.  One night on the night of Lilatul Qadr, the night everyone stays up to pray, we all went to New Amsterdam’s mosque.  It was customary to dress in white.  In the morning hours, just before sunrise, while still dark, Ishmeil decided to pretend he was a ghost.  So he stooped down in the middle of the road and waited for someone to come along.  A cyclist was the unfortunate person because he saw this white thing in the middle of the road, thought it was a ghost and turned and rode back as quickly as he could.  There are so many pranks like this that we got up to together.

Growing up in Guyana _Castor Oil story by Auntie Rosie

June 29, 2021
I Remember the time when the boys were all given castor oil during the summer holidays & they went over to Bhoujie to play, then they all started wanting to go toilet, but couldn’t make it, I was there, so I put cement bag paper in their pants!

Growing up in Guyana _Saw mill trap from Uncle Forook

June 29, 2021
We got into mischief.  One of the most dangerous and to be honest, terrible thing we ever did was to set a trap for any kid that would come into the sawmill to play.  Ishmeil, Khalifaw and myself dug a deep hole in the sawdust hoping that one of the kids would fall into it.  We never thought about safety or danger!   Once the trap was set, of course, a boy from the neighbourhood came  along, falls into the hole, and the huge wall of sawdust came crashing down and buried him. We worked like mad to free him.  We were scared at first but afterwards we had a good laugh; and then we did it all over again!

Growing up in Guyana_ Electric Cable story from Uncle Forouk

June 29, 2021
One of our favourite things to do was playing in the sawmill.  We would play hide and seek, cricket, and run around with never a second thought. This day Ishmeil saw a huge electrical, high voltage power line, lying across the sawmill dam.  He picked it up not realizing that the power line was live, and he could not drop it as the power surged.  Luckily for him, Tyrone, his cousin, was there and somehow managed to separate Ishmeil from the power line.  Anyone who knows Ishmeil will know that from that day, he was weery about any type of electrical work.

Growing up in Guyana_ Tarantula story from Uncle Forook

June 29, 2021
As usual, when Ishmeil and I were together, we found ourselves in some situation that, looking back became some of the most memorable of my life.  This particular day after we had cooked and eaten, Ishmeil leant back against an old tree while we were chatting.  Down from the tree I suddenly noticed a huge tarantula the size of a hand, crawl down onto his shoulder.  I immediately told him not to move and I quickly flicked it away saving him from a bite!  I will never forget when Ishmeil saw the size of the tarantula, how terrified he was.

Moving to London_Party Days from Uncle Forook

June 29, 2021
Eventually I moved to the UK and we reunited when he moved too a couple of years later.  Meeting up with Ishmael when they came to London was like no time had passed.  We had a group of us, Gouse, Zaman, Sotto, Ishmael and myself who would party and drink hard.  If we got into mischief in Guyana, we definitely continued it in England.  Immediately we picked up where we left off and were inseparable, but this time instead of playing in the sawmill we played hard in London going to all the parties, discos and whatever else we could get up to.  I don’t remember ever seeing him drunk.  But lets just say it wasn't for lack of consumption!
Those days were parties, known to all the girls, and having fun, much to the distress of Sis. Zeena because sometimes we never came home, or if we did, it was late and we would have to sneak in.

Family Life from Uncle Forook

June 29, 2021
Family was always important to Ishmeil and our kids grew up together.  We, and many of our circle of family and friends, loved music and  countless weekends were spent at house parties at each of our homes till the early hours of the morning while our kids ran around and played.   I never forget that Ishmeil's favourite song at that time was: Shining Star by the Manhattans.
My time with Ishmeil was so full.  Full of family, laughs, mischief, parties, from Guyana to the UK and always being by each others side.  Although I left the UK to move to Canada years ago that bond was always there.  I have never forgotten it and I never will.
