A year since your passing, Jack, but you are alive in all the people who loved you.

I grew up with Terra and Ruby, so I grew up always spending summers with Jack on the beach boardwalk and camping. He was so kind to me and I hope to live like him. Soaking up every ounce of life :)

I have known and interacted with Jack for many decades, mainly in his role at CDFG/CDFW working on sea otter and white shark interactions after Dan Miller moved on. I was always interested in the ecosystems that sea otters, white sharks, and other organisms were integral parts of, mainly for a course at MLML in Marine Ecology, but also another course - Population Biology. Jack was an affable and knowledgeable individual, well versed in the ecology of Monterey Bay. I was very sad to learn that he had passed away. But he has left behind a strong legacy of dedication to his work and to the marine ecosystems of Monterey Bay. He will be missed!

While I hadn't seen Jack in recent years, he is someone who I always think of fondly. He was pivotal in my dissertation research. I spent many hours with him. He was/is one of those people who are the "salt of the earth". He always had a smile on his face and is someone you always enjoyed spending time with!

His Life

Retirement, 2011-2023

January 11, 2023
Jack officially retired from CDFG in 2011, but immediately signed on as a retired annuitant. He continued to help with sea otter captures, sea otter counts, oil spill drills and responses, and other projects until October 2022. When he wasn't working on otter and oil spill stuff, he was busy with projects at home, camping and hiking with his family, and traveling, including a trip to New Zealand to visit his cousin, and a rafting trip with friends in 2021.

California Department of Fish and Game, 1967-2011

January 5, 2023
Jack started working for the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) just after graduating from Sacramento State College in 1967. He worked as a fisheries biologist for his first 5 years, then as a sea otter biologist for 39 years before retiring in 2011. During his tenure he made significant contributions to the understanding of sea otter biology, population dynamics, and causes of mortality. During his last 20 years (1991-2011), he was part of CDFG's Office of Spill Response (OSPR) where he worked on oil spill preparedness and response. He responded to several large and small oil spills (including Exxon Valdez before OSPR was formed), rescuing countless oiled animals. Many of his co-workers at CDFG and colleagues at other agencies and organizations became life-long friends.

Net mending

January 5, 2023
For years Jack has been wanting to teach me how to mend tangle nets, but we kept putting it off. Finally in October 2022, in preparation for upcoming sea otter captures, we made it happen. By that time, Jack's cancer had started metastasizing, and he was tired and in pain. However, he insisted on coming to Santa Cruz to teach me and our colleague, Lilian, how to do it. In truth, Jack struggled to remember the knots and pattern to follow for proper net mending, but he wouldn't give up and we worked as a team and got the nets in good enough shape to be usable for our captures the following week. I'm so grateful to have spent that day with him, learning from him and just being in his presence.
