Jim was a caring and compassionate, attentive yet often quiet person who was quick to lend a hand and easy going. His personality may be best captured in his agreeable responses; “Okey Dokey”, “Oh Well” and “It is what it is.” It is the fun times, the laughter, the joy and the warm memories of times we shared together throughout his life that we carry in his absence.
Jim was born in Philadelphia on November 3, 1933. While some don’t stray far from their birthplace Jim lived adventures - from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Illinois, to the warm climate of Naples, Florida eventually settling in Cary, North Carolina. Jim had a full and rich life with chapters that included running his own businesses in roofing and real estate. Jim enjoyed people and parties. A proud member of the United States Air Force, he loved his country and took his Red, White and Blue patriotism seriously.
Jim is survived by his five children; Elizabeth McGee Sutton, Katherine Locke, Jacqueline Calimer, James Duke Jr, and Micheal Duke; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Jim married Rebecca “Becky” and their marriage continued through his passing. He is also survived by his step children; Mary Beth Munz, John Hose and Tom Hose; and five step grandchildren.
Jim and Becky were inseparable. When you thought of one you thought of the other. They were each others strengths. Love continues even in his passing.
In Jim’s business pursuits, he never had a “customer” or a “client” as they were all “friends”. Everyone that worked beside Jim adored him. Neighbors smiled. Strangers were taken by his kindness.
Jim was also a friend of the four legged. Jim could be often found side by side with his dog Chips and later with his furry friend Benji.
In lieu of flowers Jim would love for you to give a gift in his name to the Wake County Animal Center (the adoption center of Benji) so that others can experience the love and companionship of pet ownership.
Consistent with his life, in passing Jim asked that each of us remember the best of times and just like he was for us, to be there for each other. To that we all should respond “Okey Dokey.” ;)

Jim will be missed, but his memory will continue to warm our hearts forever.
Family will be privately celebrating his full and rich life and our love for Jim on October 10, 2021
