Celebrating the Life of Jennie Muñoz
On Wednesday, March 31, 2021, Jennie Muñoz, loving daughter, sister, and friend passed away at 43.  She was born on January 18, 1978 in Stockton, California to María Socorro Vargas and Juan Muñoz-Botello.  With hard work and dedication, she went on to achieve a Bachelors and Masters in Social Work pursuing her lifelong passion for championing human rights around the world. Jennie's determination to serve on the front lines of foreign policy even took her overseas on tours in Venezuela and Sudan.

She was generous and a fighter for those in need. The list of strengths she embodied are too numerous to list but top among them; her love of family, her faith, her resilience, adventurous spirit, zest for life, internal nobility, and authenticity are a banner to follow.

Jennie is survived by her mother, her father, her siblings, family, and friends.

The celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, April 10th, 2021 at St. Joseph on Capitol Hill. This will be open to all who would like to pay their respects to Jennie. Please note there will be protocols in place due to COVID-19 (maintain social distancing at all times and protective mask) and a virtual option.

“I believe that in order to achieve something, whether it be success, love, or prestige, one must go through obstacles and overcome them with endurance, courage, and most importantly, love for all things. Therefore, I can say that my future may be full of struggles and hardships, but I will overcome them with strength and spirit, just as my parents taught me.” - Jennie Muñoz, Briar Cliff University Review 1997

Jennie, It's been nearly 21 years since we last saw each other as we graduated from Briar Cliff. I was in complete shock to see the post that you had passed. I can still see your big smile when we crossed paths on campus. You were a kind, compassionate, and cool person that brightened the world. I hope your family and friends find God's love as they mourn your loss. The world may not be as bright as once was, but Heaven had gained a bright star/angel. May you rest in peach and perpetual light shine upon you.

Jennie, I am so sad that you are no longer with us. I watched as you pushed forward while going through treatment and I really admired your strength. I will miss your bright smile and witty sense of humor. Although we wished you had stayed with us longer, God needed you more. Rest well.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Jennie's untimely death. She was a wonderful colleague and delightful friend who never failed to lift the spirits of everyone around her during our three years together in Caracas. I can only imagine the distress of her family and close friends for having lost her so soon, and my sympathies are with them. But in my grief I find it hard to remember Jennie without smiling, even if just a little, and trust that everyone who had the privilege of knowing her feels the same way.

Dear Jennie, even though we didn't work closely, but your memory will always stay with me. I am so sorry and shocked that you had to leave this earth so early, but I guess when the final call comes, we all have to follow it... May God rest your soul in peace and console your loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in eternal peace.

I had hoped to have a long and wonderful conversation with Jennie soon, but that was not to be - in this time space. Jennie was a special and unique woman. She had a fire that burned within her that she carried with her as she served others and lightened the heart of those she met along life's journey. I was privileged to be her social work professor and advisor/mentor at Briar Cliff University. I will always have a special place in my heart, Jennie, for your smiling and beautiful spirit. My prayers and sympathy to her family and friends. May special memories sustain you during this time of loss.

You called me "sister," as I did you; It's because you treated your friends like sisters and brothers and in your absence sealed a larger family. I miss you so much Jennie. I'm thankful for the times you were fun, sassy, determined, vulnerable, and spiritual. In all of it - you gave so much of you to make people feel special. I'm still in shock, because I didn't think this day would come. And in the window to God that you were, I will find comfort in knowing you are still with us.

I had the pleasure of knowing Jennie in college at Briar Cliff.  She always had a smile on her face, was full of compassion and a dear friend to many.  As I read of her numerous involvements she was certainly an angel on earth. I am saddened to hear of her passing and pray for her family and loved ones.  Nothing but fond memories of you Jennie!  Rest in peace.
