It still means a lot to me as I get to read them on his passing anniversary - today even eight years later. It warms my heart to know he left an impression with you. Still can’t believe he is gone. He was a giant in my life and the best role model.

Still remember and miss his pleasant companionship. Visited him many times at Silverado and always enjoyed his company.

Still miss my golfing and choir friend. I think of him every now and then when I hit one straight or sing well, which he always did. Never forget him!

I worked with Joel when I was about to lose my job at Shell about 7 years ago - I got permission to start working with outplacement services early, and I had heard about JWUMC's job search program, and started coming to the weekly meetings there.
Joel took me through the whole program, and was a reassuring presence during the whole process. His life experiences, sense of humor and calm demeanor made a large difference to me during a very stressful time of my life (one kid in college, one two years away).
As it turned out, I was able to find another job at Shell, and I am still there now getting near retirement - but working with Joel made all the difference in the world. We need more Joel Bates in the world - he will be missed.

I am so very sorry that I can't be in Texas to share this sad event with all of you. Know that my heart and prayers are with you all.
I remember when I went to visit years ago and was petrified of driving all those crazy lanes. It is any wonder that your dad permitted me to drive you kids to the place where they placed that huge snake around your necks (Greg and Colin). I also remember eating at your house in Fox Chapel and my mom telling your dad to redo her steak and make it well done. He apologized,but said he would not take the blame for "killing it" by making it anyway but rare.
