We're sharing this memorial as an opportunity to remember and celebrate our father, John Thomas, Jr.,  AKA "JT", who passed away January 19, 2021, at the Envoy at the Meadows Retirement Home in Goochland Virginia after many years of medical challenges and a short battle with COVID-19.  While growing up and living in Springfield, Mass for many years, John moved to Richmond, Virginia over 20 years ago building a community of friends and eventually settling into Envoy at the Meadows Retirement home for his past few years.  JT's life was full of family, friends, and many adventures and memories we will cherish forever.

Please feel free to remember and share your memories here.  Also please feel free to share.

We have decided to wait until we can gather safely in person to fully celebrate his life together.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to here John H. Thomas Jr, Memorial Fund.

Thank you for everyone's love and support in what's obviously a difficult time.

Heartfelt Prayers to all members of the extended Thomas Family and Community. One of the more quietly compassionate and unassuming persons known in this life, JT gave more of his care and concern than most ever suspected. As friends, John and I were both born in 1946 just one month apart. It was widely rumored at the time that we shared the oft-dubious distinction of being 'evil babies' together. As youngsters we never actually 'Got Caught' but there were many HIGHLY suspicious circumstances wherein our parents openly yelled that ONLY because there was insufficient evidence were we not "gettin' a beat'n'!" (...just sayin'). The better truth is that our Brother, Parent, Colleague, and Friend was gifted in his ability to make people laugh about themselves. During his last trip to Washington, DC many years ago, we sat in my office nonstop howling, yowling, and bustin' up with laughter for 40+ minutes ... with most of my Washington Office outside the closed doors wondering "What In The World...?" we'd gotten up to in there. John is greatly missed, but G-d will have much more use for such a Spirit.

To the family of John Thomas, my condolences. John and I, with several friends walk many days from Burr Street to the old Classical HS. Precious memories recalling those days. We have those memories to cherish and keep them in our hearts. Be encouraged as you walk the last mile with your Father, brother, grandfather.

It has been a long time sine I saw John Henry. My memories of him are when we were kids. I always saw him laughing and often getting into a little mischief. He was full of life and loved having a good time. I admired that in him. He is at peace now and has no more worries. Blessings to his family and mine.

I will always remember my Dad's love of music. No matter what was going on, there was some type of music in the background. Many days I woke up to a house vibrating from Jazz, Motown, R&B, Classical, Zydeco, Singer Song Writers, and almost every type of music you can imagine. I will never forget his headphones with a cable long enough you could walk through the kitchen, dining room, and even into the living room with them on without ever breaking stride. This was pre-blue tooth and we got some first walkman's that ever came out while I was in junior high - but the sound quality of the his headphones always made the walkman sound like tin cans.

I know I have him to thank for my love and diversity of music and dance!

What I remember most about John Henry is that as a youngster he had a crush on me. He literally flirted with me. I had to remind him that not only was I way older than him, I was his first cousin! Rest well, John. I will miss your bright personality and even your corny jokes.

There are so many memories I could share about my big brother. He was a terrible tease and loved living by the "Big Brother Code" as the reason he was duty-bound to torment his baby sister. He played the bass fiddle that as you know is a fairly large instrument-certainly much bigger than an elementary school baby sister. And yet, he told me it was my job to carry his base cuz it was "in the code." He got away with it until one day our mom caught us walking to the car together with me struggling behind him to stay on my feet and not drop this huge very heavy bass fiddle. When she asked why he just chuckled. She popped him right in the chest and he laughed harder. I will miss you dearly JT. Try to behave--Meta and Edie are watching. :)

His Life

John H. Thomas, Jr. Remembrance

February 14, 2021
John Henry Thomas Jr, also known as “JT”, born in Springfield, MA in September 1946 to John Sr. and Meta Thomas, passed from COVID 19 on January 19, 2021 at the Envoy at the Meadows Retirement Home in Goochland Virginia .John attended Springfield Public School graduating from Classical High School, Class of '64, where he played the bass fiddle, timpani and other percussion instruments in the band, orchestra, and swing band. He was also drum major of the marching band. He also played in the Springfield Young Peoples’ Symphony. He attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania where he was Bucknell’s Marching Band’s Drum Major as well as met and married his wife Carol Dobbie by whom he had two wonderful daughters. He graduated with a degree in music and returned to Springfield to later teach music at several schools as well as play professionally in several regional professional bands.

In addition to music, JT was also an avid photographer, starting his own photography business and was regularly seen with a wide variety of unusual cameras capturing still, creative landscapes, and candid action shots in addition to his teaching career. He was an avid and constant student of photography always trying new types of cameras and techniques. Many of the family photos reflect he was much more comfortable behind the camera then in front!

Although his love for music and photography would follow him throughout his life, JT was able to join an early group of music majors in the 80’s recognized and being trained in computer programming. With a growing interest in computer programming, John Henry initially became a computer programmer and later a systems analyst that would lead to multiple new opportunities including an independent consulting opportunity leading him to Richmond, Virginia where he settled for the last 20+ years of his life. After many years in the computer industry, John decided to return to teaching, getting his Masters from the University of Phoenix while teaching computer programming and technology to adults. JT eventually retired and transitioned to Envoy at the Meadows Retirement Home where he built a community of friends and staff who were there caring for him at the end.

JT is survived by his aunt Helen Spence, uncle Joseph Postell, daughters Leona Thomas, Heather Sagan, her husband John; his sisters Lucie Lewis, her husband James, and his sister Sharyn Thomas; his grandchildren Carl, Kendell, Kage, and Avalon; 2 great grandchildren; and a very large, loving extended family who will all miss him very much.

A memorial celebration will be scheduled for a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made here:  John H. Thomas Jr, Memorial Fund.
