Sixteen-year resident of Lincoln, CA, Joseph A. DeSouza peacefully passed away on January 30, 2021 at the age of 77 due to complications resulting from Lewy body dementia. Joe is survived by his daughter, Janet Hart, his daughter, Wendy De Souza, his three grandchildren Nathalie Hart, Nicolas Hart, and Taji Anooshahr, and sons-in-law Daniel Hart and Ali Anooshahr. In 2004 Joe retired from his career in court reporting and moved from Redwood City to the Del Webb/Lincoln Hills community where he made many lifelong friends. Originally born in Macau, China, Joe moved to the United States and graduated from Jefferson High School in San Francisco, before joining the Air Force. Derided by his older brother for being too verbal, Joe was passionate about the English language and after the Air Force was drawn to court reporting and enjoyed correcting people’s grammatical errors, particularly if they were lawyers. He started his own court reporting business in San Mateo and used shorthand in the days before voice recognition and spell-check. His friends describe him as fun-loving, good-natured and loyal. Joe’s passions include playing sports, eating sweets, spending time with his grandchildren, and telling jokes. Over his lifetime Joe was married twice, and enjoyed companionship in his retirement years in the Singles Club where single men are few. In 2018 he was diagnosed with bladder cancer, and after treatment and the love and support of his friends and family, he fully recovered and went back to enjoying his life just as he had before. Over the course of his life Joe believed in the American dream, as an immigrant who worked hard, started his own business, supported his daughters, and built a secure life for himself so that he could retire early and enjoy it with wonderful friends.
