Ken was a friend who I was lucky enough to know for nearly 40 years, the entire length of my time in broadcasting. When I was just getting started in the 'biz' in 1975, Ken helped to direct me to KAHI radio in Auburn, just outside of Sacramento where I got my first job. We would run into each other throughout the next 39 years of our lives at Giants, 49ers, Warriors and Raiders games. Ever the gentleman, Ken taught me the importance of being courteous and even handed with the sometimes prickly and unpredictable personalities that we deal with in pro sports. We had many great conversations over the years in the press box, and I'll never forget the last time I saw him. It was just two days before he died. Shortstop Brandon Crawford belted a game winning, 'splash' homer into McCovey Cove in the last of the ninth to give the Giants a thrilling 'walk-off win over Colorado. Ken was sitting right in front of me and his good friend George Devine Sr. in the press box. . As we filed out of the press box, Ken, who was listening to the broadcast as he often liked to do, pulled out his ear buds, put both fists into the air and announced loudly with a big smile: "Now that was a great game!"
