Aunt Carol and Uncle Kent played a big part in my life, especially when I was a kid. I always looked forward to going to their house, and Aunt Carol took me on a few outings with just the two of us that I remember being really special. She was a very warm, caring person, and I will miss her very much. I will also miss Kent and how he was always interested in interesting things like technology and history. We had many good conversations on those topics, and he was always up for a good conversation, even on topics on which we disagreed. I also always thought it was very sweet that Carol and Kent would often read to each other in the evenings, which I think is a great example to emulate.

I will never forget Uncle Kent and Aunt Carol and their unique qualities, and I am grateful for the role they played in my life. Rest in Peace.

Took me a while to get the words together. The memories I have of Aunt Carol and Uncle Kent I cherish. The trips down to see them, the laughs, the late night Sonic runs, and lunches at P.F. Chang’s. Aunt Carol took me charming Charlie’s where shel turned me onto “bling”! Uncle Kent started my addiction to Apple products, the hours we would spend finding new functions and geeking out over technology. The stories they used to tell me about our family, The memories we made together. It feels like yesterday I sat on the couch, shared by aunt Carol and the dogs, talking about everything and anything. Then moving over to the recliner, laughing with Uncle Kent, always a schnauzer in his lap. I miss you both deeply, you will be forever missed. As Uncle Kent and aunt Carol would always say… “Love you sweetheart”.

Uncle Kent and Aunt Carol - much love from the Bill Manby family - especially Uncle Kent and all the “Apple-bonding” you did with dad!  I know he has so many fond memories, we hope you are reminiscing about them together now…

You'll always be in my heart and memories, Kent and Carol. You were like second parents to me in college. Thank you for your love and support.

His Life

Their Life

April 16
Carol Roush Manby passed away February 19, 2024 surrounded by her daughter and husband after a long decline from dementia.

Kent Douglas Manby passed away April 13, 2024 in the presence of his daughter following a rapid decline from advanced kidney disease.

Kent and Carol were married for 55 years and raised their children, Scott and Jennifer, as well as several dogs whom they treated and loved as children (Carrie, Shiloh, Savvy, Moët, Gwinevere, and Sebastian.)

Kent and Carol’s health declined in the mid-2000’s and they both resided in a nursing home for nearly a decade. Both faced numerous health issues and ultimately succumbed within two months of each other. Their loving daughter Jennifer and grandchildren, Corinne and Parker, were the bright spots in their lives during those years.

Jennifer, Corinne, and Parker would like to thank all of the medical personnel and staff for their care over the years.

“I’m by the shopping carts”

April 16
When I was 19 I drove from Dallas to Houston to visit my friends Jen and Leslie when we were all home from Baylor on summer break. There was no GPS (the mid-90s of it all) so when I left Leslie’s house her mom wrote out detailed directions for me to navigate my way through the outskirts of Houston to find the highway back to Dallas. I got lost once and called her from a payphone. She figured out where I was and explained how I needed to turn around and get back on track. I did…but got hopelessly lost again. I pulled over into a shopping center and went into a grocery store. I was too embarrassed to call Leslie’s mom again so I called Jen. She put her dad on the phone. His calm voice made me think of how my own dad would be doing the same for one of my friends in this situation and I burst into tears, half because I was upset, and half because I was just knew, despite having only met Jen’s parents once or twice, that Kent was going to come to my rescue. He asked where I was. I looked around and through distraught tears I said “By the shopping carts.” He suppressed a laugh and said “I mean, where are you geographically? What city?” I figured out that I was in Meyerland and Kent, Carol, and Jen all got in the car and drove across town to get me. It was almost dark and everyone (including my parents when I called them) agreed I was done driving for the day. I spent one more night at Jen’s. Their family’s sense of humor was exactly like that of my own family…they teased me all evening and kept me laughing although Carol’s mom side came out and chastised them to stop (I didn’t mind the teasing at all, but will never forget her sweet mothering). Kent and Carol barely knew me then but went out of their way to show kindness towards a college girl with no sense of direction and I’ll never forget it. They were fun people and raised a fun daughter who is one of my best friends. I’ll miss them.
