Larry Carr Obituary

April 1, 2014

On March 10, long time resident of Petaluma, Larry Carr past away peacefully at his residence in Troy, Idaho surrounded by family. Larry had been battling cancer.

Lawrence David Carr was Born October 8th, 1929 in Palatine, Illinois to humble parents, David Carr and Dorothy Zelsdorf. Larry was the second oldest of 11 children. It was during the depression and life was a struggle everyday to just survive. When Larry was 15 years old his mother died giving birth to her last child, forcing the family to be farmed out to different relatives to be raised. Larry went to live with his grandmother for a time, and then with his Aunt Clara, who introduced him to Adventism.

Later he went to Broadview Academy where he worked every free moment to pay his way. While there, he found that he had a love of music, a love that he enjoyed the rest of his life. After graduating, Larry headed south to Southern Missionary College in Collegedale, TN where he studied Business and Accounting. He was active in the music program, and also pursued an active social life. He enjoyed his time in the south until he received a letter from the President asking him to join the Air Force.

Larry entered active service in the Air Force in July of 1949 in San Francisco, CA. After basic training, he spent his tour of duty at Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert. In the Air Force, Larry rose to the rank of Sergeant working as a disbursing supervisor and also enjoyed playing his saxophone in a touring jazz quartet. He was Honorably Discharged in January of 1953.

After his time in the military, Larry headed for Pacific Union College in Angwin, CA to continue his education in Accounting, paid for by the GI Bill. During his time at PUC he worked in the boiler room and at the Post Office. It was at PUC where he met and later married Jeanine Eddy.

After graduation, they moved to Sonoma, CA where Larry started work at Sonoma Valley Hospital heading up the business office as administrator. After a time Larry started an accounting office in town and the firm was successful. His sons, Greg and Bill, were both born while he was in Sonoma. In 1967 his marriage to Jeanine dissolved.

Early in 1968, Larry purchased a house in Petaluma, CA and later married Danalee Wilson in November of that year. At that time, he adopted Danalee's two daughters, Lorie and Lanie. Not too long after, Larry and Danalee had two more children, Weston and Lyndi. During this time, Larry had a CPA business in Healdsburg, CA. In 1977, he moved his practice to Petaluma. His office was located across the driveway from his home so that he could be close to his family.

Larry kept his practice there until just recently when he moved to Tory, Idaho in 2013. He gave up his CPA license at age 80, but still worked actively doing accounting until his passing. During his time in Petaluma, Larry faithfully served each week at the Petaluma Seventh-day Adventist Church. Aside from being church treasurer for nearly 46 years, he also volunteered his energies as an Elder and Sabbath School teacher.

Larry also served for many years as treasurer and board member of the "Redwood Foundation" for the local Adventist Academy in Santa Rosa, CA. In his life, Larry headed many innovative business ventures which include tapping natural energy-a wind farm in California and a hydro-electric project in Oregon. He also had his hand in running a tug boat company, and was part owner and manager of a nursing home. Even though he had many responsibilities, for years Larry selflessly cared for his wife Danalee until she died in 2010.

Larry is survived by his brothers, Jim Carr (of Kinston, IL), Allan Carr (of Hesperia, CA), David Carr (of Phoenix, Az), his sisters, Pauline Olson (of North Chicago, IL), Alice Hale (of IL), Dottie Payton (of Kingston, IL), his son, Greg and wife Christina Carr (of McCloud, CA), son, William and wife Dorothy Carr (of Plymouth, FL), son, Weston and wife Suzanne Carr (of Magalia, CA), his daughter, Lorie and husband Mike Bock (of Angwin, CA), daughter, Alaine and husband Tom Gardner (of Yakima, WA), and daughter Lyndi and husband Bill Littler (of Troy, ID).
