Obituary

November 11, 2015

Mr. Leroy Emmett Jones Jr. died unexpectedly at the end of October 2015 in Mobile, Alabama at the age of 71 years.

He is survived by his mother, Angie Symns of Sacramento, California; his four siblings, Carl Edward Jones of Sacramento, Califorina,  Ronnie Michael Gaines of Sacramento, California, Beatrice Symns of Sacramento California, and Dedria Symns Ried of Bentonville, Arkansas; his five children, Tammie Nelson of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Angela Jones, Denise Jones, Sylvia Jones, and Alvin Jones. He is preceded in death by his Father Leroy Emmett Jones Sr; his siblings Dorothy Jean Jones, Richard Jones, and Alvin Jones.

Leroy was born on November 21, 1943 in Mobile, Alabama to Leroy E Jones Sr and Angie Jones. He graduated from Central High School in 1963. He enlisted in the US Air Force on June 1, 1963 and received and honorable discharge on March 29, 1974.  After leaving the US Air Force he worked briefly in varying jobs until 1981 when he became a Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service.  He also remained active in various political campaigns in Prince George’s County, Maryland and the Greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Leroy married Pearline King on June 1 1967 in Edinburgh, Scotland.  After a period of time the couple welcomed three children, Tammie, Angela, and Denise Jones.  He later divorced Pearline in 1973.  Then he married Alexine Butler on December 8, 1973 in Washington, D.C.  After a period of time the couple welcomed two children, Sylvia and Alvin Jones.  He set about teaching them the value of self-control and a good work ethic. His children remember him as a tireless worker who loved to spend hours landscaping outdoors.  They also remember him for freely offering his advice to them for any and all situations life presented them with.

Leroy was a witty light-hearted individual that never shied away from opportunity to strike up a conversation with people he encountered.  This ability of connecting with people effortlessly served him well as a political campaigner.  Also, he put these talents to work mentoring young men at the Cheltenham Youth Facility in Cheltenham, MD and at the Gospel Rescue Mission in Washington, D.C.  While living in Washington D.C. he was an active and dedicated member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church and often volunteered his landscaping talents for the benefit of the church.
