I knew Roy from Driver Ed at SHS. but also in his role as advisor to the youth group at JCC. He was so giving of his time and truly engaged with the life of so many young people growing up in Scarsdale. He was a special person.

There are only a few people in life who make a real difference. For me that was Roy Stemer - first as a talented, caring and influential teacher at SHS. But even more important later when he became a special friend and even a second father after my Dad passed away. Roy was always there for that needed. talk. Most important he reminded us of who we were and to be proud of that. Roy was a teacher and treasured influence upon my boys as well as those whose lives he touched at a sensitive and impressionistic age.
Bucky and Carol remained our good friends & we enjoyed visits in Fla.

Roy and I worked together at YSB for several years. My favorite Roy story, of which there were many:
At Christmas our supervisor Celest baked sweet potato pies for her staff as presents. Roy immediately sat down in the break room and ate the entire pie. The expression on his face was like a small boy, priceless.

I remember Roy as one of our Driver's Ed teachers and one of my baseball coaches assisting Bill Schmidt on varsity or was it Pat Menna on JV? Terrific on the basics and always a "guy" one could talk to. We at SHS were most fortunate to have teachers like him whether in academics or athletics. I spoke with Roy just before our 40th and and both were thrilled at the opportunity.

Mr Stemer was my Football Coach and freshman basketball coach. One game I intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown., As I came back to the sideline, I was looking at the crowd and trying to enjoy the moment. Mr Stemer said, " Hay, Ashbach, get the hell back in there and play defense." He was a no nonsense kind of guy and always had me on my toes.I will miss him !.

I was one from the class of '66. He was a teacher that everyone liked and respected. He was one of those great teachers at Scarsdale High that influenced me to become a teacher myself. Thank you so much, Mr. Stemer for your life and your influence.

Bucky caught me and Fred Leber sneaking out of school the one and only time I ever attempted such delinquent behavior. In Florida, he worked with my wife and we became friends and I enjoyed his company very much. He was an iconic member of the SHS I will always remember. Rest in peace, Bucky........

Roy Stemer was a Positive Force/Friend in so many lifes........surely, the Perfect Choice for all of us among Class'61 at Scarsdale High School!
He was and will be remembered for the light of his smile and words making any darkness disappear....Thank You--Roy!

As a teacher and coach, Roy Stemer was clearly the adult, but he never spoke "down" to you, as though you were just a "kid". He taught us loyalty and decency, and evidenced passion for teaching and coaching, with an enthusiasm for each students and his/her welfare. I spoke with him briefly 6-7 years ago. [He remembered me but had to struggle to get the words out,] We will miss him.

I was Ellen Dolph at Scardale HS, Class of '55. Mr. Stemer was my Driver's Ed. teacher - ( I did not play football :) He was the most encouraging , positive (and brave!) instructor. I remember getting to the top of a hill and being afraid to go down; would I really be able to stop the car? I told my 17 yr grandgirl about him, when she was learning to drive. What a gift he was!

I played football for Coach Stemer and remember as I went from Junior year to Senior, he took me aside and gave me a talking to about my role in the team and what was expected of me. He inspired me to step out of myself for a moment and think of larger issues about teamwork and leadership. It was one of the touchstones of my young life..

I wasn't good enough to play on Roy's teams, but I loved and admired him, thought him an inspiring example of how to be a man: gentle, resolute, attentive, thoughtful (in both senses of the word), strong. I remember his telling a couple of SHS graduates about to drive back to Williams, "Keep it under 80," and so never drive that fast. I knew who had a clear view of what was reasonable.

We called him "Mr. Stemer." Later I said "Roy," still later learned that his preferred nickname was "Bucky." He was our SHS class of '61 adviser, aIong with I don't know how many other classes. He came to our 25th reunion in 1986. I visited him and Carol in FL a couple times in the 70s/80s. His passing brings back fondest memories. He gave us full measure of wisdom and love.

Besides my Dad he was the most positive infulence in my life. He was always there for me. Even trips to the hospital as a kid. Dad's best friend from Paterson East Side. Coached football and track with the tough love that kids need. Stayed in touch for years after my Dad passed. Lucky to have had him part of my life. I will never forget the love and caring.

You touched the lives of so many people and taught by your example how to be a kind, intelligent, caring, supportive, generous person and loyal friend. While I may not have always showed it, I am glad you were my father. I will miss you. The world is a better place for having had you in it. May your soul be at peace now. Love, Jonathan

Bucky was my father-in-law and an exceptionally kind and generous person. He took care of and loved his family very much and we will miss him everyday. Bless your heart dear father and be at Peace.
